The Young and the Restless fans know how this dance goes: One character decides that they know what’s good for another character better than they themselves do. Character #1 then makes a grand, noble gesture that breaks their heart…but it is for the other character’s own good. The other character is gob-smacked, hurt. They beg to know what they did wrong, they beg for another chance, but Character #1 stands firm. They are a martyr! They are a saint! And the other person is an idiot. But not Sally Spectra.
Sally (Courtney Hope) wasn’t fooled, not even for a minute. As Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) explained that he no longer loved her, maybe he’d never loved her, and she should just forget about him and focus on her career, Sally could see right through him.
She dared him to admit the truth. Then she tried to blackmail him into admitting the truth. Then she just went ahead with her life, knowing the truth but moving beyond it.
Even when Adam finally broke down and admitted that she’d been right all along, that he had broken up with her in order to allow her to keep her dream job, Sally kept slaying. She didn’t need Adam’s martyrdom, and she didn’t need him patronizing her.
She could see clearly now, the rain was gone, and she could see that Adam was just using the truth to try and manipulate her again. And she didn’t feel like playing. She knew he still loved her. And now he could run along and keep self-destructing. That’s not what she was looking for in her life.
Empowered, confident, and, most importantly, vindicated, Sally turned to Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) to prove how over Adam Sally now was. Sally ate and left no crumbs, as the cool young people say.
