Victor Newman takes great pride in his parenting on The Young and the Restless. He is always there to tell his children what to do, how to do it, and why they haven’t done it nearly as well as he would have. He encourages them with threats and emotional blackmail, then withholds praise in order to help them reach even greater heights.
We’re used to all that by now. But, on Tuesday, December 27, Victor (Eric Braeden) proved that he still had more to teach us about parenting…and sunk even lower than we could have possibly imagined.
Victor wanted Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) to come back to work for him – well, for his sister, Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle). Adam politely explained that he was happy where he was, at Jabot. Victor explained that not only was Adam not happy at Jabot but that he obviously wasn’t happy in general. The woman he loved was now dating his brother. The mother of his child continued to be unacceptable. And he didn’t have his father’s respect. In other words, Adam had nothing. NOTHING!
And why did he have nothing? Well, it was all his own fault. Adam was his own worst enemy and he brought every single failure on himself. There’s blaming the victim…and there is rewriting history.
Adam losing Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) was his own fault. Not because Victor and Victoria ordered him to fire her from her dream job and Adam – admittedly, stupidly – decided breaking up with Sally was the way to make her happy.
Adam leaving Newman Enterprises was his own fault. And not because Victor appointed him president as part of a plot to help Victoria con Ashland Locke (Robert Newman), and then instantly pulled the rug out from under Adam as soon as he was no longer useful.
Victor is written as such an awful, awful parent that, if we didn’t know better, we’d assume it was deliberate, in order to make fans sympathize with and take Adam’s side. But, at the same time, the show writes Victor as always right about all things. So we have to assume that they agree with Victor’s scathing assessment of his son. And that they’re trying to gaslight us as much as Victor is always doing to Adam.
