A Critic’s Review of Young and the Restless: Dreaming Of The Possibilities

When it comes to Young and the Restless, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of Y&R’s week that was.

The Young and the Restless: A Critic’s Week In Review

Stop. The. Presses! Something interesting happened on The Young and the Restless. Oh, wait. You know what? That something interesting actually happened during a promo for next week’s Y&R offerings.

Truth be told, the only reason that promo was interesting was because it actually got me thinking about what classic character (read: character not created by or currently being destroyed by Young and the Restless head writer Josh Griffith) might be making a return.

And the possibilities are…well, not exactly endless, but certainly interesting. It’s clearly a woman, and she’ll mean…something to Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman). Could be Patty Williams, Jack’s much recast first wife.

Most of the folks here at Soap Hub are salivating at the prospect of Stacy Haiduk reprising the role, but if I had my druthers, The Young and the Restless would get Andrea Evans, if, for no other reason, then the soap’s ability to flashback to the time Patty pumped Jack full of lead. And sure, they’d have to edit around the fact that Jack was being played Terry Lester, but that’ll be pretty easy. Evans was most assuredly the star of that scene.

But there are other prospects. The black widow (assuming the woman in black is Keemo’s widow) could be mad, bad, Jack obsessed Mari Jo Mason. Or mad, bad, maneater Leanna Love (Barbara Crampton). Or mad, bad, presumed dead Diane Jenkins. Or mad, bad, also presumed dead Kelly Andrews (last played by Cady McClain) Or, and this one is a real throwback, how about not quite mad, only a little bit bad Lindsey Wells?

Either way, I’m sure I, you, we, and the Y&R audience at large will be let down. As per usual, it will be a whole lot of build-up with very little payoff.

Further Y&R Musings

* Hmmm…Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) and Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) as daytime TV’s Lord and Lady Macbeth? Yes, this is something that I could very much get into.

* How nice, Elena Dawson (Brytni Sarpy) has graduated from a storyline hell that saw her in need and want of sleep to playing Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic) personal Jiminy Cricket.

* Just when I thought The Young and the Restless was going to write Victoria Newman Locke (Amelia Heinle) as a boss [expletive] wise to Ashland Locke’s (Robert Newman), they go and majorly disappointed me.

I hear and understand that there are many of you out there who can’t wait to see Vic fall off her high horse and onto her backside, but there’s another way of accomplishing that without writing this character as just plain stupid.

* Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) is absolutely infuriating. That is all.

The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes. For more about what’s coming up in Genoa City, check out all the latest that’s been posted on Y&R spoilers, and for an in-depth look at the show’s history, click here.
