Daytime fans who follow Sean Kanan know that he’s not only appeared on multiple soaps, most notably The Bold and the Beautiful as Deacon but are also aware that the actor’s a successful author. Now, he’s got a new tome coming out and it is available for pre-order.
Kanan has written the book, WAY of the COBRA, which can be pre-ordered by clicking here.
“COBRA is an acronym,” Kanan tells Soap Hub, noting that the letters stand for “Character, Optimization, Balance, Respect, and Abundance.” The actor/author adds that he’s imparting strategies and philosophies that he’s personally employed to achieve what he has in life.
In addition to successful runs as A.J. on General Hospital and Jude on Sunset Beach, Kanan’s also played bad boy Deacon Sharpe on both BB and The Young and the Restless. He’s appeared in several films. He’s authored two other books — The Distinguished Gentlemen and Success Factor X.
More recently, Kanan starred in and created the Daytime Emmy-winning digital series Studio City, in which he plays Sam Stevens, a daytime actor, who’s at a personal and professional crossroads. Studio City is available on Amazon Prime now.
“I draw on a lot of things that have happened to me in my life and I attach them to various lessons in the book,” he says. Kanan notes that the tome is beneficial to anyone who wants to achieve in life. It doesn’t have to be related to show business.
He cautions that success isn’t found in Instagram feeds where posters parade their toys and show off various air-brushed photos of themselves. “If money and material things are the only barometers of success, the majority of [people on social media] would be unsuccessful,” Kanan adds.
Kanan advises people to be clear with what they want in life, noting that there’s a goal-setting element to the book. He adds that if a person could do four basic things, then he believes they have a 90% chance of success.
Those things are: 1) Follow the Golden Rule — do unto others as you’d have them do to you. 2) Act with integrity. 3) Be kind — which doesn’t mean nice. “Being nice,” Kanan says, “is conforming to social mores. You can be outwardly nice, but not kind. Sometimes, employing ‘tough love’ is being kind [in the long-run].”
Finally, Kanan adds, 4) Keep grinding away. “Don’t stop,” he says. “Keep working. I’ve been doing this for 30 years and I’ve had times when I thought I’d never work again. Others, where I feel I’m on top of the world.”
Kanan believes through his acting and his writing, he can reach people. There’s lots more in the book about the WAY of the COBRA, but Kanan says he has two major “why’s” in his life. “I look at my wedding ring,” he says, noting his marriage to wife Michele. “The second is I love inspiring people. Both of these fuel me and help me get out of bed when things get tough.”
