Wayne Brady, as Dr. Reese Buckingham, got himself in a big jam after selling baby Beth to Taylor and Steffy on Bold and the Beautiful. The Let’s Make A Deal host’s real-life has been filled with dramatic turns, too. He’s revealing secrets about his life in a new Freeform series, Wayne Brady: The Family Remix.
The Brady Bunch
The cast for the show includes Brady, his ex-wife and best friend, Mandie, their daughter, Maile (ex-Tiffany, B&B), and Mandie’s life partner, Jason. Brady had revealed his pan-sexual a while back, a subject that will be expanded upon in Wayne Brady: The Family Remix.
“Stepping into the docuseries waters was our choice because we’ve been telling folks for a while how, you know, this crazy family that it’s not the norm, that we existed,” Brady explained to journalists at the TV Critics summer press tour in Pasadena, Calif.
He reveals that there were some scripted sitcom shows being bandied about based on his life but, he says, “it was never funny as real life.” He and Mandie and their production company partnered with Fremantle and approached programmers about telling their story the way it needs to be seen.
Malie had experience in front of the camera during her brief B&B stint, but says it took some getting used to being followed around by a reality crew. “It’s super weird, really weird, real weird having cameras in your house all the time,” she says, “but I got used to it. I kind of missed our crew. I really grew to love our crew and when we stopped, I was like, ‘Oh, where’s George?'”
Brady made headlines when he came out as pansexual and viewers can expect that to be a part of the show — but just how much a part of it, Brady isn’t saying. “That’s something that I am going to be incredibly coy about and say that you’ve got to check it out to see,” Brady teases.
“Because the thing is just because you come to a life decision doesn’t mean that you’ve got to do all of it at once,” he adds. “It’s like I’m coming out. I had to actually go to my therapist and go in a book and go, ‘Okay, so, what does it all mean? Because I’m not gay, but I do think that person is attractive. I could find that person — what does this mean? And bisexual was seen too limiting. And back to you, I hate being put in a box. So, I said what is it?”
“I explained to him what pansexual meant,” Maile chimes in. Adds Brady: “[My daughter’s] generation is amazing. So, I wanted to represent for everybody that just wants to love and find the person that they love. And if you don’t get it, I don’t know what to say. I’m still trying to get it myself.”
Wayne Brady: The Family Remix debuts on Wednesday, July 24 at 10 p.m. ET on Freeform.
