The Bold and the Beautiful’s Sean Kanan is so much more than an actor. He’s an author, an entrepreneur, and a motivational speaker. His book Way of the Cobra laid out a blueprint of how we can improve our lives and shed the fears that society has drilled into us. He continued expanding on his concepts in Way of the Cobra: Welcome to the Kumite, and helped his followers apply his strategies to find meaningful happiness within their relationships in Way of the Cobra Couples. Now, he’s channeled all of his profundity into an amazing TED talk that’s truly inspiring.
Unbecome Who You Are
Kanan opened up his TED Talk speech by relating a story from when he was 22 and working on the film Karate Kid III. A pain in his leg that he dismissed as mere muscle ache turned out to be life-threatening internal bleeding. He had to get surgery and was told he might not survive it. With all that, the director told him he needed to be back to work in two weeks or he was done.
Realizing he needed to turn his life around, he pushed himself harder than ever, recovered, and finished working on the film. Years later, at age 50, he was also in danger, but not of losing his life. Rather, alcohol abuse and over-eating caused him to nearly lose his marriage. It was then he decided he needed to “unbecome” his old self and transform into a forward thinking person who gets things done.

We Must Achieve Meaningful Happiness
From these experiences was born Kanan’s philosophy: “Transform yourself and you will transform the world.” He realized that society instills fear and doubts within everyone, and since the future is unknown – and humans fear the unknown – he asked, “Isn’t it time you discover who you really are?” Kanan further explained that transforming himself meant, “Reconnecting with my authentic self and achieving meaningful happiness.”
He also explained a strange dichotomy because to get results, you must “ignore them. [It] sounds oxymoronic, doesn’t it? But it’s true, if you want results, ignore them. Focus on the process, the habits, and the actions.” His analogy was driving: people don’t panic when they drive their car and pray that they’ll reach their destination safely. They’ve already got a “bulletproof” formula in place for driving effectively, and we need to have a similar process as we approach life and transform into our best selves.
He then shared the secret of life which is, “Discovering the unique gift that each of us has, that we were born with,” and sharing those secrets and your transformation with the world.
