Five heartthrobs from The Bold and the Beautiful stopped by The Talk this week to chat with the show’s hosts about their on and off-screen lives. Forget about storyline spoilers — Matthew Atkinson, Joshua Hoffman, and their co-stars dished about what it takes to prepare for scenes with their respective leading ladies.
Atkinson and Hoffman were joined by their B&B castmates Lawrence Saint-Victor (Carter), Scott Clifton (Liam), and Tanner Novlan (Finn) for an afternoon chat with The Talk hosts Akbar Gbajabiamila (Max, B&B), Amanda Kloots, and Jerry O’Connell. Among the topics they discussed was how actors get ready for, shall we say, more intimate scenes that range from kissing to going shirtless!
First, Atkinson chatted about an unusual, intimate scene he performed on B&B — one that garnered the attention of the crew. (Cameramen and boom operators have seen it all over the years, so if you get a reaction from them, you know you’ve done something unique.)
The actor recalls when Thomas was trying to make Hope jealous when he was in one room with another woman, and she was in another. Thomas started to make as loud a noise as possible to get a rise out of her. “The crew was just staring at us,” Atkinson shrugs with a wry grin.
Hoffman’s RJ stayed away from the family drama but now that he’s returned, the character is immersed in plenty of story. In addition to helping his grandfather Eric (John McCook) with his designs, RJ has a blossoming relationship with Luna (Lisa Yamada).
He may be a daytime newcomer, but Hoffman has kissing scenes down pat. How so? “I’ve got a guy,” the actor assured The Talk hosts, hastening to add, “No, hear me out! We all know Herbie, right?” (The actor is referring to the show’s stage manager, Herbert Weaver, Jr.) Hoffman says that Herbie will approach him shortly before kissing scenes, and he’ll say, “‘Hey, man, do you need one of these?’ And he gave me a mint. Now, he does it every time!”
Atkinson continues to play shirtless scenes, especially now that Thomas’s relationship with Hope (Annika Noelle) has picked up steam. Surely, the well-toned actor does pushups before those office rendezvous moments? Or, maybe he lifts dumbbells or barbells? Would you believe none of those are correct?
“It used to be I was doing all kinds of pushups and squats,” Atkinson shared. “It was a crazy thing. Then, I just realized if I just bring a little band with me…” The actor is referring to a long rubber band that he places under his feet, and then he does a bicep curl by grasping the other end of the band with both hands. He and Saint-Victor demonstrated the band exercise, as did Gbajabiamila, Kloots, and O’Connell. Well, O’Connell tried to. Check out the video to see how his efforts were met with some comical (and pain-free, we hope) results, as well as hear some backstage secrets from Scott, Saint-Victor, and Novlan.
The Talk airs weekdays on CBS at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT.
