Soaps aren’t shot live anymore, but it’s well-known that producers try to do one take on scenes in light of economic realities. Krista Allen, who plays world-renowned psychiatrist Dr. Taylor Hayes on The Bold and the Beautiful, recently discovered that the show must go on — especially when props decide to have a mind of their own!
B&B viewers noted last week in the scene in which Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) was breaking up with Taylor Hayes — again — that she dropped a fruit bowl. Was that bit in the script? Allen says a lot of viewers inquired about the incident.
“We have been asked SO much since Friday’s episode, ‘Was there any reason for dropping the fruit bowl?!'” Allen tweeted. The actress responded that there sure was a good reason — and it had little to do with Taylor being shaken over the news that Ridge delivered to her. “Yes! … It broke in my hands! You’ll see me holding the piece in slow-mo. TK [Thorsten Kaye, Ridge Forrester] stayed perfectly in the scene with me as I continued on!”
In the early days of soap operas, daytime serials were broadcast live and then, were taped one time straight through without stopping even though they weren’t technically broadcast live. Actresses wore nightgowns under the clothes so they could be appropriately dressed for bedroom scenes that took place after a commercial break. If thespians flubbed a line — or needed a stage manager to feed them a line — (you can see this happen on rebroadcasts of Dark Shadows) — the show kept moving.
Most of today’s actors weren’t around for those days but, in a way, they’re finding out what that is like as shows attempt to shoot episodes as judiciously as possible. Kudos to Krista Allen and Thorsten Kaye and the show’s producing/directing team for keeping the scene going even though the fruit bowl and its contents clearly had other ideas!
