Since 2007, Heather Tom has played Katie Logan with aplomb on The Bold and the Beautiful. The fan-favorite character has been through a lot over the years and is back at the forefront now that Bill and Poppy are splitsville, and Will has returned. Tom took time to discuss which storylines have had a great impact on Katie.
Storylines Have Lasting Effects
Tom spoke to Soaps and discussed some of the stories that she felt had a lasting influence on Katie. One of them was the constant love triangle between Bill (Don Diamont — who talked Bill and Katie), Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang), and Katie, which caused a rift between the Logan sisters, which Tom found “Even more heartbreaking than Bill and Katie breaking up.” Happy that they had a meaty story, Tom was still a little upset that the sisters were put at odds.
Another thing she praised head writer and executive producer Brad Bell for was his willingness to allow a story to have a lasting impact on a character with repercussions for years to come rather than be wrapped up all nice and tidy. She noted, “The heart transplant and the postpartum depression [arcs],” as stories that Bell ensured would continue to define Katie. “It wasn’t just like, ‘OK, this happened, and now she’s fine.’ It’s been an ongoing part of who she is,” she explained.
Katie’s Evolving
Concerning Katie and Bill’s breakup, Tom felt it hit her character hard. She remarked, “To have that fall apart in that way really dredged up a lot of her insecurities about being second best. It’s had a lasting impact on her and on her relationship with Bill.” This is why Tom plays her character with such poise because she’s able to take all the little bits of things that have affected Katie over the years and incorporate them into the fundamental aspect of who the character is.
Tom did note that while Bill is looking to reunite with Katie, she’s stayed away from him because he’s bad for her. Even their son Will (Crew Morrow) wants his parents to be happy but understands that they’re not so good for each other when they’re together.
“There’s a part of her that will always love Bill,” Tom said. But with all those key storylines under her belt, she’s playing Katie as much wiser these days.
