The Bold and the Beautiful executive producer and head writer, Bradley Bell, recounted the moment when he decided to save Liam Spencer’s life. At first, he was supposed to die from brain cancer. But he was given a new lease on life.
Key Takeaways
- Liam Spencer was diagnosed with brain cancer.
- He was initially supposed to die.
- The health crisis was marred by a medical scam created by Dr. Grace Buckingham, who tried to pay back her ex-husband’s gambling debts.
- Liam was given a new lease on life and married Hope Logan.
Bell Explains Shocking Twist
In an interview with TV Insider, Bell admitted that he had an original plan for Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton) to die from brain cancer. However, this was a storyline he struggled to follow through with.
This was a creative risk he was unwilling to take. Bell enjoys keeping the viewers on their toes, and that’s what he planned to do instead. “As a writer, I feel like I have to do things that are unpredictable to keep people on their toes,” Bell explained.
So, he planned an unexpected twist in which Liam was misdiagnosed. Grace (Cassandra Creech) used him for her one-million-dollar medical experiment, so she could pay off Reece’s (Wayne Brady) gambling debts. His bookies were harassing her and her daughters.
“But when it came down to it, I thought of the body of work that Scott has done, and the incredible actor that he is, and I couldn’t do it,” Bell explained, recounting that difficult moment. He struggled with the creative direction in this storyline.

Liam Marries Hope Again
Months ago, Liam assumed he was going to die. However, he was given to chance to bring his family back together. Liam and Hope (Annika Noelle) remarried last week. Bell’s focus was to reunite them.
“And after all that Hope and Liam have been through, to keep the character alive and to see his family come together just won out in the end in my mind,” Bell said.
Hope and Liam’s happy marriage might not last for long, now that Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) is back in the picture. He wants to be at the forefront of Forrester Creations, especially now that Eric (John McCook) has retired.
However, Hope doesn’t want to be in the same room as him, according to the B&B previews. She quibbles with Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) about wanting her brother Deke (Harrison Cane) to work with her.
