There’s an old saying that says “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” meaning that people need to find a balance between their work and social lives. On The Bold and the Beautiful, characters at Forrester Creations have this situation going on only it’s in reverse. They don’t seem to work at all!
Yes, we totally get that it’s a soap opera. And while the show is set in the fashion world, viewers don’t want to see patterns being cut and gowns being delivered. Viewers care more about the personal lives of the company’s personnel. however, it doesn’t appear as if the Forresters are ever working on anything!
What does COO Carter Walton (Lawrence Saint-Victor) do besides either visit with Quinn Fuller Forrester (Rena Sofer) and talk about how he never meant to hurt his boss, Eric Forrester (John McCook)? Ridge Forrester’s (Thorsten Kaye) office appears to be a multi-purpose room where many different characters sit when the scene calls for it.
Veteran B&B fans can recall when people practically needed an engraved invitation to enter Eric’s office; now, the Forrester patriarch’s room is a place anyone can enter at any time.
Forrester Creations has lots of people working there but it seems that mostly all they do is talk about their personal problems. There’s Carter and Quinn’s affair, Eric’s erectile dysfunction (Human Resources PLEASE issue a memo! We beg of you!), and the Logan women’s quest to reunite Donna Logan (Jennifer Gareis) with Eric. Occasionally, we’ll see a model having a fitting and someone’s laptop will be open — but that’s about it.
When The Bold and the Beautiful premiered, we saw the Forresters and their associates hastening to put together a fashion show from a backstage perspective. They were giving last-minute looks to gowns as they talked about their lives. Over the years, we’ve seen the Forresters battle over BeLieF, Brooke launch Brooke’s Bedroom, and the Forresters present various fashion shows and hold press conferences.
While all those stories were going on, interpersonal dramas would unfold as the characters dealt with romance, divorce, life, birth, death, and other emotional beats. It is possible to combine both — work and personal drama — but right now, B&B doesn’t seem to be doing that.
Maybe there’s a reason the Forresters never have to work at Forrester Creations. Does the company’s primary revenue come from work done at Forrester International? Is Quinn’s jewelry bringing in the majority of the income? It’d be nice to see the Forresters start to prepare for a fashion show to remind viewers that they’re in the actual couture business.
Maybe the Forresters don’t look like they’re actually working because they don’t have any competition. Bill Spencer‘s (Don Diamont) not trying to take over the company. There hasn’t been a rival fashion house to give the Forresters a run for their money since Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) was in town. Donna not being around to answer the phones probably won’t be as noticeable because let’s face it, they don’t often ring.
The actors do their best to make Forrester Creations look like a workplace but a few simple additions would help give the fashion house an even busier atmosphere.
