Thomas Forrester’s been on quite the emotional journey the last few years on The Bold and the Beautiful as he’s gotten his life back together. Thomas’s portrayer, Matthew Atkinson, took a different kind of trip when he traveled to Boston, Massachusetts. The fan-favorite sat down with Soap Hub to chat about his recent excursion.

Matthew Atkinson – Beyond Boston

Atkinson has traveled to Beantown in the past. On this last trip, he took advantage of the fact that neighboring states aren’t that far away from each other. Find out how the actor made the most of his trip to the east coast.

Soap Hub: What brought you to Boston?
Matthew Atkinson:
I’ve been there a few times in the past. This time, I went because my girlfriend was shooting a movie there, and I had a week off. I flew out [when] she had a few days off from filming. We traveled around the city, ate a bunch of lobster rolls, and went to a [baseball] game at Fenway [Park]. We both love to travel. [Boston] is such a great town. It’s so much fun. Every time I’ve been there, I’ve had fun.

Soap Hub: When did you go, and what tourist spots/landmarks did you visit?
Matthew Atkinson:
I was there for the 4th of July. It was a busy but exciting time to go. We saw the fireworks, and we also explored. We went to Boston Common and also the Cheers bar. I didn’t know there was an actual bar. I knew there was a sign out front, but I didn’t know there was an actual bar there, too. We got a few tips on some restaurants in Little Italy [in the North End]. We also went to a place along the [Charles] river.

Soap Hub: Let’s break the fantasy about the place ‘where everybody knows your name’ — the Cheers bar in Boston doesn’t quite look like the one on TV, correct?
Matthew Atkinson:
[Laughs] No, it’s not the same [as on TV]. I became a bartender back in Georgia at a TGIF. The bar there looked like the Cheers bar on TV, but if you go to the one in Boston, you see how tiny and small it is. It’s weirdly crowded. It’s like Disneyland in that you can get memorabilia like a ‘Norm’ mug. It’s cool to experience.

Soap Hub: Did you stay in Boston the whole time?
Matthew Atkinson:
No. We also took a day and drove down to Newport, Rhode Island. I was thinking going to the Cape [Cod]. I want to go to all 50 states, and I’d never been to Rhode Island. Newport is a really cool town. Everyone was so nice. It was quaint, and the food was great.

We also went down to Plymouth and saw both Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower II. That’s the cool part of the Northeast and Boston. If you’re there for a week, you can spend a few days in the city [of Boston] and then, take one day to drive and see in the south coast and then, drive up [north] up to Maine and you can also see New Hampshire. Within a few hours driving, you can get to so many places. Going to Boston is a great travel destination if you want to see multiple states and you have a week. You can also stay in Boston for the whole week. There’s so much to do there.
