A little over a year ago, Tanner Novlan made his debut as Dr. John “Finn” Finnegan on The Bold and the Beautiful. Recently, the show gave the character a lot of backstories to unpack as the good doctor got married to Steffy Forrester and Novlan delivered effortlessly like a seasoned veteran. For his performance as a man who gained both a wife and a birth mother in the same episode, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week honors for B&B on Tanner Novlan.
Recently, Finn, who had revealed to Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) that he was adopted decided to declare this personal news with his in-laws all at once. Why that might like something sound odd to do on paper, Novlan brought just the right balance of vulnerability and honesty to the revelation when Finn shared his origins in Eric’s (John McCook) office.
Soaps are all about romance and couples. Novlan continues to prove what a fine addition he is to the show’s cast as his character has established himself as a romantic lead. Finn’s attentive to Steffy, their son Hayes, and her daughter Kelly (Avalon & Collette Gray) with Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton) — all of which have endeared him to Steffy’s loved ones on-screen and Novlan to viewers off-screen. And now, with the introduction of Jack (Ted King) and Li Finnegan (Naomi Matsuda), viewers have seen additional sides to Finn; he’s quaintly embarrassed as his parents have shared details of their childhood.
This was Novlan’s first B&B wedding as a groom and he shined as the man who has captured Steffy’s heart. “I don’t think I will ever stop being amazed by your beauty and your strengths,” Finn emoted in his self-written vows. “You have given me the greatest gifts — Hayes and the chance to be a doting stepfather to Kelly. I pledge to be a partner that you can rely on. I promise to be a father and a stepfather to our children that they can depend on. I’m going to be right by your side as we grow into our future…I love you.”
The biggest test for Novlan came at the end of the week after the wedding ceremony was over. After checking on a patient in private (or so he thought), his birth mother, Sheila Carter, (Kimberlin Brown) literally stepped out of the shadows, congratulated the groom and announced that she was his mother. Marriage can often send honeymooners to the backburner but, as B&B viewers have already witnessed, that’s not going to be the case with Finn, Steffy, and the (birth) mother-in-law from hell!
Tanner Novlan is going to be able to sink his teeth into even more meaty material as Finn processes not only meeting his mother but discovering her complex relationship with his new in-laws. We look forward to seeing these dynamics unfold!
