Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For B&B: Scott Clifton

Scott Clifton brings a refreshing honesty to his role as good guy Liam Spencer on The Bold and the Beautiful. For his role as a husband who’s patience is being tested, Soap Hub bestows upon the three-time Daytime Emmy winner another accolade — Soap Hub’s Performer of the Week for B&B.

Scott Clifton – Performer of the Week

There are two kinds of characters on The Bold and the Beautiful — those who design and those who don’t — and the latter should never pester the former right before a fashion show. However, Liam, played earnestly by Scott Clifton, couldn’t help himself but broach his wife the day before a fashion show that he was a bit weary of her spending to much time with Thomas Forrester (Matthew Atkinson).

The couple’s conversation quickly escalated to an argument as Liam tried to convince Hope Logan Spencer (Annika Noelle), his wife, that Thomas was up to no good and should not be trusted for reasons that she should have uppermost in her mind. However, for some reason, she does not. “How many tears did we shed when he let us believe our daughter was dead?” Liam asked his wife. That question, right then and there, should have put an end to the discussion.

B&B reminded viewers of Thomas’s machinations by showing a quick flashback to Thomas and Liam fighting just before Liam (Scott Clifton) told Hope that Beth was alive. (That story beat propelled B&B to the top spot in the coveted 18-49 Women demographic that advertisers covet.)

Hope’s strength is her ability to forgive and allow for second chances but is Thomas really deserving of that? With every molecule of his body, Liam has tried to convince Hope that the answer is no. Hope countered to her husband that people are capable of change but Liam noted that Thomas doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to that.

Like a lawyer arguing a case in court, Liam passionately used facts to try to Hope to see the light. He pulled it back a bit when Hope said her showing was in a day and that she couldn’t just dump her lead designer. It wasn’t the right time. If Liam was looking for someone to whip him into shape, he made the right move by joining his father Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) at Il Giardino for a heart to heart over a meal. In no uncertain terms, Bill let Liam know he was on the right track when it comes to Thomas. This fueled Liam’s position that he needs to keep his wife away from the designer — despite the fact that they share a son, Douglas (Henry Joseph Samiri).

It’s one thing for Liam to concede that Hope and Thomas spend time together at work — but Hope spending the weekend with Thomas and Douglas is a different story. Liam doesn’t lie but he fibbed to himself when he thought that if he could just make it through the Hope for the Fashion preview he’d be okay.

If Liam doesn’t go into law, he could explore becoming a psychic and offer to read people’s futures. He suggested to Hope that her showing would end with her and Thomas holding hands, raising them up in victory over the showing. Liam gently but firmly tried to get Hope to keep clear of Thomas but she has blinders on when it comes to Thomas being duplicitous.

Liam would probably prefer to be proven wrong but he caught his wife and Thomas embracing before the fashion show began backstage. “I can’t do this anymore,” Liam shared with Bill and his brother Wyatt Spencer (Darin Brooks) back at Il Giardino. It can be helpful to imitate someone to express one’s frustration. Scott Clifton tapped a bit into his comedy skill as Liam imitated Thomas by saying in the designer’s tone, “It’s not me, Hope. it’s us. There’s nothing we can’t do together.”

Liam is in a predicament; he knows that Thomas isn’t going to be satisfied until he successfully steals Hope from him and, right now, he can’t quite convince Hope that he’s right. Hope for the Future’s future is secure given the response to the fashion show — but we’re less certain that there’s hope for Liam and Hope’s future.

Honorable mention: We love the sibling banter between Thomas and his sister Steffy Forrester Finnegan (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood). Thomas can’t put anything past his sister. Like Liam (Scott Clifton), Steffy has Thomas’s number. Watching these two playfully banter back and forth — as only siblings can — is a treat!
