Playing the good doctor, devoted husband, and loving father has made Tanner Novlan a fan favorite as The Bold and the Beautiful’s John “Finn” Finnegan. However, the daytime Mr. Perfect does border on boring a lot, which hasn’t allowed the talented actor to show off his stuff much. But B&B’s current story turn – having the character torn between his wife and children and the pull he feels toward his biological mother, Sheila – is finally showcasing Novlan in a new way, and it’s Finn-tastic.
When given the opportunity, Novlan has shown he’s capable of more than simply portraying the bland hero. Think back to when he was being held by Sheila (Kimberlin Brown) after she’d shot him in cold blood and was suddenly nursing him back to health. Remember his rage when he recalled what she’d done and learned she’d “killed” his adoptive mother, Li (Naomi Matsuda)? Novlan was forceful and in charge as Finn demanded Sheila let him go so he could reconcile with Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), who believed he was dead.
However, after reuniting with Steffy, and Sheila was sent to prison, Finn was put back into his mundane good guy box. That is, until a legal glitch set his crazy birth mother free and turned his world upside-down. Although Finn knows that Sheila poses a huge threat to his family and must be kept away from them, in his heart, he’s inexplicably drawn to her. In fact, he recently asked Steffy to cut Sheila some slack after she saved Kelly from drowning. It forced Steffy to face a harsh reality: she can’t count on Finn to protect their family, so she moved out of their home.
Novlan was at his acting best when Finn begged Steffy not to leave him, proclaiming his love for her and their kids and promising that he’d lay down his life to protect them. His emotions were raw and heartfelt. Yet, he also depicted Finn’s deep confusion and the battle inside him; a battle he didn’t understand was pulling him toward Sheila. After being saddled with playing the perfect knight for so long, Novlan’s finally getting the chance to show there are cracks in that armor. And it’s been a whole lot more interesting than watching him play Mr. Perfect.
