A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: Sheila’s Throughline

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: A Critic Ponders

The one thing that I always appreciated about Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown) was that she had a throughline. Sheila wanted to be wanted and loved. Everybody can relate to that. That and that alone made up for a lot of the shenanigans that the nutty nurse got up to. That and that alone actually gave Sheila, as sick as it might sound, at least a modicum of rooting value.

The problem, especially now, is that if we were to really pick through Sheila’s history, that throughline wouldn’t survive the scrutiny.

Though it wasn’t a romantic love, Scott Granger (Peter Barton) loved Sheila enough to forgive her a plethora of sins — raping him and kidnapping his son to name a few — and insist that Lauren Fenmore (Tracey Bregman) promise him on his deathbed that she’d do the same — and look how Sheila repaid Scott’s kindness.

Eric Forrester (John McCook) loved Sheila so much that he married her despite his family’s stringent objections and look how badly Sheila screwed that relationship up. And then we come to utterly besotted Mike Guthrie (Ken Hanes) and the equally enthralled Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan). These men are enamored of Sheila to a serious fault — this, in spite of the serious toxicity inherent in both relationships.

When you think about it, Sheila has achieved her life’s goal time and time again only to be the one who fulfills some supposed prophesy that she’ll never be able to sustain the benefits. In retrospect, that’s actually Sheila’s throughline. She’s her own worst enemy. There are a lot of us that can relate to that too.

Further B&B Musings

* Has The Bold and the Beautiful just plain forgotten about Thomas Forrester (Matthew Atkinson)?

* I get it, I get it — Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Taylor Hayes (Krista Allen) are friends. While I appreciate the commitment to the new world order, how about we dispense with the schmaltz that permeates every scene those two are in and simply have them act like real adult women embracing a newfound kinship?

* Will Heather Tom [Katie Logan] ever again be given a storyline worthy of her talents? This woman should be embroiled in a plot, not relegated to recapitulation and an occasional cutesy scene with Katie’s maybe-boyfriend Carter Walton (Lawrence Saint-Victor).

I’m hoping against hope that Katie will at least have a major presence in the upcoming ‘Battle For Bill’s Soul’, but I also can’t help but feel we’ll get one scene with her reading her ex for filth, another with her making an emotional plea for him to see sense, and that will be the end of her involvement.
