A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: Questions & A Welcome Visit

The author’s opinions on B&B are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: The Critic’s POV

Throughout the week, I found myself consistently asking myself “Why is it that…” For example, why is it that copious amounts of flashbacks — some of them literally depicting moments from a previous scene — and regurgitated dialogue are passing for plot development? I get that there is a strike on, but how about advancing the storylines at a trot rather than a light shuffle?

Why is it that Tanner Novlan [John “Finn” Finnegan] can actually ACT, but he’s consistently given little more to do than react to the unfolding drama around him? (And, what does it say that Novlan is FINALLY getting the opportunity to flex a muscle other than the ones on his, admittedly chiseled physique, but only at the expense of his character’s throughline?)

Why is it that Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) has no problem admonishing Bill (Don Diamont) and his big stinko of a plan to entrap Sheila (Kimberlin Brown) but she’s not once decried her father and the role he played?

And, why is it that Liam (Scott Clifton) is all aghast at the idea of Steffy and the children being alone with Finn — he who cannot be trusted — but he’s totally A-OK with Hope (Annika Noelle) and Beth being on their own with only Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) to protect them?

Further B&B Musings

* Here’s another question for you all to debate. What is up with all these *shudder* “sexy” nicknames for the male members of the cast. Bill “The Italian Stallion” (complete with him stomping his feet and neighing) was one thing, but then came “Honey Bear” for honey-obsessed Eric (John McCook), and now we’ve got “Big Daddy” Deacon (Sean Kanan). How about we stop this trend before it goes any further?

* I truly didn’t know how much I loved and/or needed Li Finnegan (Naomi Matsuda) on my screen until I saw her dish up that heaping helping of tough love to Finn. I mean, momma done went and told her boy she sees exactly why his wife left him. Harsh, but true!
