A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: Peeved, Justified & Gratified

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: The Critic’s POV

Judging by a number of comments posted on various Bold and the Beautiful recap articles — in particular, “Thomas Forrester Cons Brooke Into Looking On The Bright Side” and “Thomas Forrester Cons His Way Back Into Hope’s Life…Again” — I feel justified in saying that many of you are pretty peeved at me.

To be honest, I’m pretty tired of defending my anti-Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) position, just as I’m sure you devotees of the character are tired of defending yours. Therefore, I intend to say two things, and two things only about this obvious bone of contention before moving on to…well, I was going to say better and brighter, but I’ll just say, before moving on.

1) You are never, ever going to convince me to sympathize with, champion, or otherwise invest in a character who had every intention of keeping his lover’s (read: obsession’s) daughter from her and who caused — whether accidental or intentional — the death a young woman — and yes, if Thomas hadn’t been chasing after/panicking Emma, she wouldn’t have swerved off Old Decatur Road and met her maker.

2) The look that Thomas shot when Douglas (Henry Joseph Samiri) announced he wanted to resume living with Hope (Annika Noelle) and Liam (Scott Clifton) told me everything that I needed to know about where his so-called rehabilitation stands.

As promised, we’re now moving swiftly to on…and I’m about to say — well, type — something that I never thought I would say/type in a million years. I AGREE with Liam. My goodness, that pained me greatly.

On what planet would a woman actually reteam with a man who has chronicling done her wrong, let alone give it a moment’s consideration? Damn…I just said something else mean about Thomas, didn’t I? I’m not supposed to be doing that. Honestly, that was intended to be a dig at Hope. It just boggles my mind that this woman would prioritize a fashion line over…everything else. Who does that?

And as for Hope’s claim that they’ve tried out other designers — Who? When? At what place, because it clearly wasn’t Forrester Creations. Or, are we expected to believe that Eric (John McCook), Zende (Delon de Metz), and Thomas are the only designers in the whole of L.A.?

I also, in spite of better judgment, find myself slightly intrigued by the (seeming) development in the twisted, tawdry Bill/Sheila corner of the show.

We here at Soap Hub have a pseudo betting pool — pseudo because none of us have the real readies to put in the kitty — about just what Bill’s (Don Diamont) “reason” for getting Sheila sprung from prison is, but before I share the office favorite, I’d be interested to hear what YOU think it might be.

I do commend Bold and the Beautiful for (again, seemingly) giving Bill some real agency in this storyline, because prior to Wednesday’s episode, the only thing I could figure was that my favorite Daytime TV stallion was but a pawn in Sheila’s secretive endgame. Kudos for bucking expectations.

Further B&B Musings

* I couldn’t help but giggle — or did I blanch? — when Liam proffered that Bill wasn’t a monster. Um, hello, the man once made up his mind to murder a very pregnant Amber Moore. Bill might be entertaining as all get out, but he’s NOT a good person. Not in the slightest.

Note to self: Devote a future column to examine the reason I can stomach Bill but grouse every time Thomas appears on my screen. I’m obviously a hypocrite, but surely there’s more to it than that…

* Were any of those Carter/Katie scenes relevant, let alone necessary? I mean, I thought the two of them had exited the “friendzone” months and months ago, but then again, I am not as dense as Carter has proven himself to be, so maybe he really did need that fact to be explained to him.
