A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: Missed Opportunities & Structure

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

And here was me thinking that The Bold and the Beautiful would actually do right by Lawrence Saint-Victor/Carter Walton considering that the mutually inclusive pair is celebrating ten years with the soap.

Instead, Carter got a shiny new trinket for his desk, a handshake from Eric (John McCook), and a hug from Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), and Saint-Victor got….a minute-long montage of his character leading meetings and a single moment of him paling around with Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) scored to some sentimental music. Okay then.

It’s not like the character has been in love triangles galore and countless emotionally wrought scenes. Ugh. Even when this show tries, they manage to get it so, so wrong.

Further B&B Musings

* Objurgations are to follow, but I would be remiss if I didn’t admit to being a might impressed by the structure of Friday’s airshow. I can’t remember the last time there were so many main characters in a single episode, not to mention that there were two separate storylines threaded throughout. Must have been a new hire.

* I’m still at a loss over this Bill/Sheila/Deacon triangle that isn’t really a triangle given that Bill (Don Diamont) has no idea he has competition for the fair and lovely (read: dark and smoldering) Sheila (Kimberlin Brown).

* Since when does Li (Naomi Matsuda) toil at the same hospital as Finn (Tanner Novlan)? Hasn’t it been established that she works at a completely separate medical facility?

* You know what The Bold and the Beautiful, don’t TELL me that Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) is seeing a psychiatrist and working to better himself, SHOW me that Thomas is seeing a psychiatrist and working to better himself.

Speaking of showing vs. telling, would it have killed you to show Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) actually struggle to believe the line that Thomas is feeding her, rather than have her instantly perform an about-face where he is concerned?

Moments like Steffy welcoming Thomas back to the company need to feel earned rather than manufactured seemingly out of thin air. I’d say to better, but…I think this is their best.
