A Critic’s Review of The Bold and the Beautiful: Hits and Misses

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: A Critic’s Week In Review

First, the good. Eric (John McCook) and Quinn Forrester’s (Rena Sofer) ruined vowel renewal ceremony was the stuff good soap is made of. McCook was given a true chance to shine during his castigation of his adulterous wife – and Ridge Forrester’s (Thorsten Kaye) determination to get to the bottom of just how Carter Walton (Lawrence Saint-Victor) could have betrayed Eric in such a manner was… dare we say, a bit humorous? It was certainly hypocritical. Maybe that’s why it was funny?

It was also nice to see a swift conclusion to B&B’s whole Thomas Forrester (Matthew Atkinson) locked in a cage scenario – and props to Hope Spencer (Annika Noelle) being the one to do the rescuing. (After this, perhaps Hope for the future should think about featuring clutches in their next collection – look how handy Hope’s was in saving the day.)

Now for the bad, the really bad. Why oh why did The Bold and the Beautiful choose to forgo showing any and all fall out from the previously discussed ceremonial debacle? Neither Eric nor Quinn showed up post-Monday’s ep; talk of the incident was kept to a minimum; Brook Logan Forrester (Katherine Kelly Lang) didn’t get to utter one, “I told you so,” or rub Quinn’s misfortune in her own face; and then there was Zoe Buckingham’s (Kiara Barnes) reaction to the whole thing.

This is a character who perfectly embodied the phrase “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” This is a B&B character who could give Fatal Attraction’s Alex Forrest a run for her money. And yet, when informed that her fiancée cheated on her with her sudden bestie, Zoe just…completely deflated. There were barely any tears shed; no fight in her at all.

Heck, she even hugged sister Paris (Diamond White) and promised that there were no hard feelings over her keeping the secret for so long. Isn’t this the same woman who just a few months ago was trying to force Paris out of town; the same woman who slipped Paris some gut bacteria because she dared date the man that Zoe wanted to cheat on her fiancée with? Talk about a letdown, and a total rewrite of the character…something this soap is known for.

And then there’s Thomas and Hope’s boneheaded decision to race clear across town, interrupt Deputy Chief Bradley Baker’s (Dan Martin) lunch (which we’re assuming was a hot dog – remember, he loves him a hotdog; it’s really his one and only character trait…because he certainly can’t solve an actual mystery or arrest the actual bad guy) and swear blindly that they have proof of Liam Spencer’s (Scott Clifton) innocence, AND NOT BRING THE PHONE WITH THEM!

They even made a point of having Hope know exactly where it’s located  – so, why in the world didn’t she run-up to the office and get it? And by the way, how bad of a criminal is Justin Barber (Aaron D. Spears)?

Further B&B Critic’s Musings

* And speaking of The Bold and the Beautiful’s Justin, we’re just gonna come right out and say it: after seeing exactly how Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) spoke to/treated Justin during their lawyer/client summit, we decided that we’re not at all mad that Justin is prolonging Dollar Bill’s suffering. As for Liam…well, they do say that the children have to suffer for the sins of their parents.

Also, though it’s probably that we’ll never really learn the true reason why, we’d like to assume that Justin’s decision to forego his revenge, free Thomas, and allow him to tell the truth to the authorities, came about because of Ridge’s leveling with him father to father.

* Speaking of dumb moves – isn’t it illegal to move a prisoner from a jail to a maximum-security prison before he’s actually been tried for the crime he’s accused of committing? Or, does L.A. have such a thing as a maximum-security jailhouse? Also, are SUSPECTED vehicular manslaughterers really considered so dangerous that they need to be housed in maximum secure facilities?

* Were we the only ones who clocked that face Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) made when she realized that Wyatt Spencer (Darin Brooks) had brought Felony Flo Fulton (Katrina Bowden) into her abode?

* More of a fool: Katie Logan (Heather Tom). Even after everything he’s put her through, she still jumped to Bill’s defense the moment Hope dared speak ill of him. Will she never break this ugly, vicious cycle?
