The mystery of Nina’s long lost daughter took a surprise turn when Nelle was revealed to have the other half of Nina’s broken heart necklace on General Hospital.
After months of toying with viewers and building up the animosity between Nina (Cynthia Watros) and Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) – usually a sure sign that two characters are destined to be related on daytime – it was a major storyline curve. However, if truth be told, Nelle (Chloe Lanier) is the perfect choice to be Nina’s daughter.
The Root of the Matter
Think about all the two women have in common. They both had horrible relationships with their parents. Nina was saddled with a ghastly mom, the diabolical Madeline Reeves (Donna Mills), while Nelle had a horrid adoptive dad in Frank Benson. The guy sold her kidney for heck’s sake. As a result, they’ve both spent most of their adult lives desperately searching for love while making mistake after mistake along the way.
Mental State
The two women have also both suffered from mental issues and spent time in sanitariums. When Nina first surfaced in Port Charles, after waking up from a 20-year coma, she was bitter and vengeful and struck out at those who she believed wronged her. She feigned paralysis and trashed her estranged husband Silas’ (Michael Easton) apartment, not to mention drugged him and clobbered him over the head. And who can forget how she induced Ava’s (Maura West) labor, forced her to give birth prematurely, and then ran off with her baby.
Meanwhile, Nelle’s acts of awful include drugging Sonny (Maurice Benard) and making him believe they’d had sex, blackmailing Ava, and framing Carly (Laura Wright) for attempted murder. Plus, it was later revealed that she killed her first husband Zachary Grant and covered it up. Then, for an encore, she tried to off her fiance and baby daddy. Michael (Chad Duell).
Bye-Bye Baby
The mother-daughter also shares an eerie similarity when it comes to their firstborn child; both of whom were immediately given away. Madeline convinced Nina she miscarried the baby she was carrying when she slipped into a coma. But, in reality, evil Mad had given the child up for adoption, not wanting any reminders of her daughter’s connection to Silas.
Nelle, on the other hand, gave her baby away of her own volition. After giving birth to Jonah (aka Wiley) on the side of the road following a car crash, being tricked into confessing to killing her first husband, and realizing she was going to the slammer, Nelle handed her newborn over to her pal Brad to raise. Then she told Michael their child had died, leaving him to mourn the unspeakable loss.
About Michael
Another weird part of the Nina-Nelle connection is Michael. Remember how Nina zeroed in on him as the perfect guy for Sasha to date when she believed Sasha was her daughter? Well, now the pair are madly in love, while Nelle’s fighting Michael for custody of their son. It’s an uncanny case of symmetry at its perfect twisted best.
