“I told him,” Granddaddy didn’t so much confess as simply announce when Lauren wondered how Garrett and his father (and their attorney) could have known about the baby. “I figured you’d already told Garrett.”
“I was still… thinking,” Lauren admitted sheepishly.
“On the other hand, better you found out sooner than later.”
“Found out what?”
“That the boy’s no good! Running like a scared jackrabbit off to his daddy, hiding behind lawyers and restraining orders like they were his mama’s skirts.”
“Garret still could have blown me off in person, at least.”
“Boy’s got no balls.” Granddaddy waved a hand in the direction of her midsection and amended, “Figuratively speaking, anyway.”
“Yeah. I do have some evidence to the contrary, I guess.”
“Nice to see you keeping a sense of humor about this.”
She quoted him, “Can’t see how pouting and stomping my feet would help the situation.”
“That’s my girl,” Granddaddy said. “All those boys, those Stevens, those Garretts, those Seths,” he caught the way Lauren’s eyes flared at the mention of the final name and quickly backed off. “All those boys, they come and they go. But you can count on me.”
