She did think about it. More than she’d intended to. Her first instinct had been to drive over to the hotel where Garrett was staying, tell him about the baby, and let the chips fall where they may.

But then she decided it might be nice to know her own reaction and plans before she demanded the same of Garrett. Especially if he, like Granddaddy, asked what she wanted first.

She wanted the baby. She knew her options and she knew her rights, and she still wanted it anyway. Not only because it might be nice, for a change, to have someone she was biologically related to in her life, rather than just people who might say they liked her – even loved her – but weren’t obliged to. A typed letter from their attorney slipped between the folded papers, informed Ms. Lauren Briggs that if she launched a paternity suit or gave her as-yet-unborn child the Ashley name in an attempt to lay claim to a share of future inheritance, they would promptly renege on any and all contracts previously signed with Briggs Construction. The Ashleys would cost her Granddaddy millions of dollars. They would ruin him.
