“I’m pregnant.”
From the moment Lauren found out – or, rather, from the moment she forced herself to believe it – she knew whom she had to tell first.
“Garrett Ashley, I presume?”
Lauren nodded, realizing that maybe she wasn’t quite as clever as she’d previously assumed.
“You tell him yet?”
“No.”
“Guessing he won’t take it well?”
“I don’t know. I don’t… really know him very well.”
Granddaddy seemed to understand exactly what she meant by that.
“Planning to keep it?”
Lauren had been wondering the same thing, but his bluntness still took her by surprise. It also made things easier.
“I – yes. I think.”
“All right, then. A new generation of the Briggs family up on deck.”
“You’re not mad?”
“Can’t see how it would help the situation.”
“You’re not embarrassed? People might think – ”
“They’re not my concern. You are.”
“Thank you, Granddaddy,” Lauren whispered.
“Hell, we’re almost at the end of the 20th Century. What did you think I was going to do? Send you to a nunnery? Paint a red A across your chest? Stick a shotgun in Ashley’s ribs?” Granddaddy paused. “Unless you’d like that last one.”
“I don’t know,” Lauren repeated. “I don’t know what I want from Garrett.”
“You think about it. And then you come tell me what I can do to help.”
