Hands shaking, knees feeling like they’d been inflated with air, she walked into Granddaddy’s office, placed the papers on his desk, and begged, “Don’t. Please.”

Granddaddy had never asked questions about what must have happened between Lauren and Seth for her to exorcise him from her life so definitively. Not that she’d told him as much. He’d figured it out on his own. And he didn’t ask questions now.

All he did was take the file from Lauren, riffle briefly through the pages with an expression that was part regret, part resignation, and peer back up as she stood there, biting her lip, and, without a second thought, threw it into the trash.

She’d followed up several times since then. Unless he was doing it in utmost secrecy (which, Lauren admitted to herself, was not completely outside the realm of possibility), Granddaddy had seemingly abandoned his plans to appropriate Seth’s research.

She guessed it was because he had bigger fish to fry. After the Harrisons had made it clear how far they were willing to go to keep Briggs’ Construction out of their precious California, Granddaddy had turned his attentions east, and Utah seemed ripe for the picking. Especially if they could pair with deep pockets like the Ashleys, who would help shoulder the expense and had more experience in that part of the country.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Briggs,” Garrett Ashley offered, extending his hand. And, once she took it, Lauren realized where the missing sparkle and “plink” of his smile had gone. Right through her fingers, zap down Lauren’s spinal cord, and straight into the pit of her stomach.
