She didn’t mind. His room looked scary. Although, at least unlike the rest of the house, all three of his windows were wide open to let in the light and offer a pretty view of the mountains in the distance. His shelves were filled with books and the phone on his desk kept ringing and ringing until he pressed a button to make it shut up. There were also all sorts of toy buildings made out of wood and clay sitting on a variety of stands. Laurie was glad she had to wait outside. She was scared she might accidentally knock one over.

Laurie was better off sitting on a chair in the hallway, swinging her legs and staring at the art on the walls, framed pictures of buildings that looked like those models in the office, along with their floor-plans and also some other sketches and drawings. Laurie didn’t find them particularly interesting. But she definitely knew she was happier in the hall than she would have been inside. That’s where all the yelling was coming from.

She heard Junior’s voice and then his daddy’s voice. Polly barely said anything. Which wasn’t like Polly. Laurie figured there had to be a reason for it. There was a reason behind everything her mother did.

After a while, they came out, Junior first. Sweat poured down his face despite valiant attempts to mop it up with a green, silk handkerchief. The arm that wasn’t rubbing his sopping forehead, cheeks, and neck hung limply by his side, making his shiny suit look uneven and wrinkled. Even his teeth didn’t seem as white as when he’d gone in. Polly, on the other hand, looked about as happy as Laurie had ever seen her. She looked like she was trying really hard to be sympathetic while biting her lips to keep from smiling too broadly.

“Great news!” Polly squatted in front of Laurie, voice high-pitched and chipper, the entire performance for someone else’s benefit. “You’re going to stay here for a bit while Junior and I take a trip!”
