“Where?” Laurie’s own voice rose, too. Only, in her case, it was in terror.

“Oh, Junior is such a world-traveler, he wants to introduce me to some of his favorite places. Doesn’t that sound exciting?”

“And I have to stay here?”

“There,” Polly beamed at Junior. “It’s all set. I told you she’d be thrilled.”

Junior nodded shakily, still in recovery from whatever had gone down between him and his father.

“We’d better hurry,” Polly all but yanked Junior by the arm. “We have so many plans to make!”

The pair of them were almost completely down the hall when Junior’s father stepped out of his office and peered down at Laurie.

Jeremiah Jasper Briggs Sr. leaned over until they were at eye-level. She wanted to step back in fear, but something told Lauren Mr. Briggs wouldn’t like it. He seemed like the type who was always testing people to find out if they were afraid of him.

Up close, he was even taller than she’d first noticed. Definitely taller than Junior. Or maybe he just stood straighter. Junior always looked like he was in the middle of apologizing, though expecting to get smacked across the back of the head, anyway.

Mr. Briggs smelled of cigars. Lauren knew all about cigars, because Polly complained about not being able to get the stink out of her hair when she worked a private Blackjack party.

He held out a hand, his palm a relief map of yellow, hardened calluses. His fingers were stained with ink and his nails were ragged, like he’d ripped them with his teeth then spit them out. Junior’s hands were pink, and they smelled like the same kind of lotion Mama put on her knees and elbows at night.

Lauren tentatively held out her own hand.

Mr. Briggs shook it solemnly. “Guess we’re stuck with each other,” he said, sounding as tired as Junior had looked earlier.

“Sorry,” Lauren managed to croak out.

Jeremiah Briggs shrugged a “what’s done is done” look, straightened up, and returned to his office, closing the door behind him.
