Episode 1
1997
“Slow down, Laurie.” Seth Danzinger, riding in the passenger seat, locked his elbow and pressed one hand against the glove compartment to keep from pitching forward, despite the seat-belt fastened securely across his chest and lap.
“Stop telling me what to do.” Lauren reached to slap his hand away. “I am so sick of everyone telling me what to do.”
He indicated her seven months pregnant stomach jammed against the steering wheel. “Killing all three of us in one fell swoop is definitely the most effective way to get that point across.”
“Shut up.”
He shrugged, watching the Northern California freeway flash by the windshield at way above the legal limit. Fortunately for Lauren, it was the middle of the night, and this particular stretch of obscure mountain road was too insignificant to warrant a speed-trap. They hadn’t so much as passed another vehicle in the past hour. “What are you getting mad at me for? This road-trip wasn’t my idea. My life was perfectly fine – ”
“Couldn’t have been. Didn’t have me in it.”
“That wasn’t my idea, either.”
“God!” She smacked the steering wheel with her palm. “How many times am I supposed to apologize for that?”
“Once would be nice.”
“You are such a bastard.”
“That’s why you love me.”
Lauren abruptly closed her mouth and swiveled her head away from Seth. She even cautiously moved her foot from the gas pedal to the brake.
“Don’t.” Lauren may have meant it as a request, but it came out more like an order.
Luckily, Seth was used to her attempts at civility. If he’d taken offense every time, their friendship would have barely lasted out the first day, much less over 20 years. That is, if you included all the periodic breaks in between.
“Just be careful, okay?” The way Lauren was whipping around the blind curves, Seth didn’t trust those flimsy guardrails to keep them from careening over the edge into a cluster of trees and off the side of the mountain.
“You mean, be careful – for a change?”
“When did you become so cynical?”
“When I learned everyone in my life has been lying to me, maybe?”
