“When did you become so cynical?”

“When I learned everyone in my life has been lying to me, maybe?”

“That would do it.”

He’d been like that as long as Lauren had known him. Reasonable. Sensible. Even-keeled. Seth claimed it was because he was so perfectly average in every respect. Six feet tall, medium build, brown hair – not too straight, not too curly, brown eyes.

“It’s a shame I have no desire to commit a crime,” he mused. “Nobody would be able to describe me to the sketch artist. They’d have to bring in half the men in America.”

“I’m done putting up with their crap.”

“Good.”

“Wow, that was convincing.”

“Now probably wouldn’t be a good time to mention I’ve heard you make this vow before. Several times.”

“Do you ever intend to cut me any slack?”

“If you wanted slack, you wouldn’t have come to me.”

“You’re right. Why do you always have to be so right?”

“It’s my unique selling proposition,” Seth began, then cut himself off to, once again, order, “Slow down!”

But, it was too late.
