International Vs. American Soaps: Which Reign Supreme?

Although the soap opera genre was born in the United States, that doesn’t mean America corners the market on them.

Soaps in some form air all over the world, with some of the most famous created in England and South America (where they are known as novellas).

In today’s modern world, you can watch international soaps at almost any time. Between the BBC on cable and satellite and streaming capabilities, you can watch any soaps day and night.

The question is–do you? Soap Hub asked just this and your answer was resounding. Out of nearly 9,000 votes, a whopping 93% of you say NO WAY!

Give Us Our Comfort Soaps
You’re very satisfied with American soaps and can’t handle others. While there are only four soaps left when they numbered in the double digits as recently as the 90s, the ones that remain are tried and true.

You’ve been invested in the stories and characters for decades and can’t imagine turning to soaps from other countries. Between The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives, and General Hospital, you have enough drama coming from the good ol’ US of A.

Branching Out
However, another 7% do engage in a little international delight when it comes to your television drama. Some soaps you enjoy include Coronation Street and Eastenders, coming to you straight from Britain. Some of you even love Korean soaps. There might be a language gap, but subtitles suit you just fine.

Of course others said they just want to see Steve Burton and don’t care if he’s on General Hospital or a novela. You just want him back on daytime and will soon get your wish.
