Soap writers sometimes get lost in their own creations. They will follow one storyline down the wormhole and lose sight of some of the players in the vast canvas they are working on. Talented thespians are placed on the back burner twiddling their thumbs, aching for a juicy story that their character can step into the spotlight for. Here are a few General Hospital characters who are most in the need of a storyline in 2022.
General Hospital: Monica Quartermaine
The problem with GH is there is a bounty of interesting characters and actors who play them. It is hard to narrow it down to just four characters we want to see more of. That being said, Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) holds the top spot on the list. Since the good doctor arrived on the canvas in 1976, with Leslie Charleson taking over the role in 1977, fans have embraced the character. Whether loving Monica or hating her (depending on the storyline), Charleson always made us care and left us wanting more. These days, we definitely want more, please.
Elizabeth Webber Baldwin
Elizabeth Webber, played by Rebecca Herbst, landed in Port Charles in 1997 as the rebellious teenage daughter of Jeff Webber (Richard Dean Anderson) and his offscreen wife, Carolyn Webber, and a bloodline linked to General Hospital legacy character Dr. Steve Hardy (original cast member John Beradino). It wasn’t long before the consummate young actress tackled a controversial rape storyline and fell in love with Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson). Elizabeth, thanks to Herbst, has had a hold of our hearts ever since. Elizabeth has been on the backburner for too long. We’re enjoying her developing romance with Finn (Michael Easton) but the couple doesn’t seem to get enough air time. It is time to change that…STAT!
Phyllis Caulfield
Phyllis Caulfield’s (Joyce Guy) connections to Port Charles go way back to the birth of Nina Reeves’s daughter Nelle Benson (Chloe Lanier), as one of the nurses who assisted during the delivery. Various residents of Port Charles tracked her down to shed some light on the shady birth and aftermath. But it was the General Hospital writers’ decision to make Phyllis and her late husband Lenny Caulfield (Rif Hutton) the backbone to Sonny Corinthos’s (Maurice Benard) memory-loss storyline in Nixon Falls that clinched her spot on this list. We need more of the calm and soothing presence she exudes, and we are invested in her future in our favorite waterfront town. So let it be written.
Austin Gatlin-Holt
Fans were devastated when the writers chose to kill off the redeemed villain Franco Baldwin and thus removing fan-favorite Roger Howarth from the scene. We all rejoiced when Howarth returned to General Hospital as Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt! But the storyline with battling the Quartermaines for his share of ELQ resolved rather quickly. The scenes about a budding (???) romance with Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) are too few and far between. And the Gladys Corbin (Bonnie Burroughs) blackmail plot just kind of fizzled. Although Howarth makes every appearance count, give the gifted actor a plot to polish.
General Hospital Honorable Mention: Brando and Sasha
Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor) and Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson) were bit players in larger plots, but the actors made us love them. When the young couple lost their baby Liam, we cried the ugly cry right along with them. It would be a shame not to explore their journey further. Allow the grief to play out. Will the loss of their child bring them closer together or wedge them apart? What will they do next? Brando and Sasha have all of the makings of a Robin Scorpio (Kimberly McCullough) and Stone Cates (Michael Sutton) or Lucky and Elizabeth super couple storyline. General Hospital: You had us at goodbye. Besides, the side bonus is more of Gladys. We could always use more of Gladys.
