Soap Hub Performer of the Week for GH: Katelyn MacMullen

Katelyn MacMullen, who plays Willow Tait on GH, shines whenever she’s asked to bring great vulnerability to her character. She’s worn the hats of a devoted mother, cult survivor, and now, guilt-ridden wife. It broke her heart to do so, but Willow recently officially and tearfully ended her marriage to Harrison Chase. For her tender performance as a wife in love with another man, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week honors on MacMullen.

We saw Willow and Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) go to the Quartermaine mansion to clear the air with Chase (Josh Swickard) and apologize to him for their sleeping together as Willow and Chase are legally wed. There was tension in the air as all three of them spoke what was on their mind. Chase even showed that he could walk again just so that there were no secrets left on the table.

However, it’s tough to get to the emotional heart of issues at Monica Quartermaine’s (Leslie Charleson) house (the late Alan Quartermaine gave it to her!) as the living room can often feel like Grant Central Station what with surprise relatives showing up wanting a piece of the Quartermaine money pie. (Yeah, we mean you, Austin!)

After Chase, Willow, and Michael had each said their piece, Chase walked out on his own two legs. Willow, however, told Michael that she couldn’t leave things like this. She was going to talk to Chase and this time, she was going to do so without Michael. Willow drove over to Chase’s place, the apartment they’d spent many happy times together, and there, the couple finally addressed their life together without being interrupted by anyone.

Chase couldn’t say no to Willow who shared that she could use a drink of water as the air-conditioning in her car broke down. He was always her knight in shining armor and he didn’t see a reason to stop now despite everything that had happened between them.

The Blame Game

Ironically, Chase knows deep down that he has himself to blame for Willow falling out of love with him. He pretended to be sleeping with Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson) so that Willow would turn to Michael and they’d stand a better chance of beating Nelle Benson (Chloe Lanier) in Wiley’s (Erik and Theo Olson) custody hearing. The plan worked — only too well. Willow and Michael bonded over Wiley and then fell in love for real. Chase thought he’d won Willow back but he hadn’t and was too busy dealing with his own issues (e.g. nearly dying) to see what was right in front of him.

“I never wanted to hurt you but that doesn’t change the fact that I did,” Willow tenderly lamented to Chase. She went on to say that she desperately wanted to repay him for everything he’d given her. After all, Chase had come into Willow’s life at a time when she was at her lowest. She recalled that he was “handsome, intelligent, and above all kind, understanding. I thought I could build a home with this guy. My horrible past no longer mattered…”

Then, Chase stepped up acknowledging his choice to fake the fling with Sasha. He said he knew there was a possibility he could lose Willow for good — and that’s what’s happened. “You and I shared a once-in-a-lifetime beautiful love and then, you sacrificed it for Wiley and me,” Willow said with gratitude and love in her voice. “I will always love you for that.”

Willow and Chase recognized that they were both incredibly lucky to share the love that they did. As they agreed to no more apologies, Willow took her wedding ring off and gave it back to him. Some divorces are amicable but these scenes showed us that some splits can also be heart-breaking. Kudos to Katelyn MacMullen for bringing such great vulnerability to her character.
