Soap Hub Performer of the Week is an ongoing series of articles in which an editor pays tribute to one performer from each show who was outstanding. For General Hospital, Alexis’s descent back to the bottle hit new heights when she had it out with her daughter, Sam.

Nancy Lee Grahn And Alexis’s Descent

Alexis has not had a very good year. First, she lost her law license once again when she lied to the medical review board about her relationship with Neil (Joe Flanigan). Then, when it seemed that relationship would actually work out, Neil died in her bed of an apparent drug overdose after a night of lovemaking.

Soon after that, Alexis learned her wrist pain was really the result of a fracture and that led to a diagnosis of osteoporosis. Alexis still tried to do the right thing and attend Neil’s funeral, but Neil’s brother put the cause of his death squarely on her. This led to a fall off the wagon with vodka and a one-night stand with Ned (Wally Kurth). At that point, Alexis couldn’t stop pouring the vodka and Sam figured it that it wasn’t water in her mother’s glass at The Metro Court.

When Sam  (Kelly Monaco) confronted Alexis, she was already at home drunk and Nancy Lee Grahn showed us how far Alexis had fallen in such a short period of time. She mocked Sam and showed her unprecedented disdain. Alexis’s disgust with life at the moment and through the years shined through and that vodka let her say what she was feeling with no inhibitions.

Alexis clearly knew she said the ‘wrong’ things after Sam left, but she didn’t care. She just poured more vodka and Grahn showed us the emotional and moral dilemma addicts go through.
