Once Steve Burton’s return to General Hospital was announced, viewers assumed that it was only a matter of time before Carly and Drew’s romance would go kaput. Boy, did it ever! Yet every dark cloud has a silver lining. In recent dramatic scenes, Carly and Drew’s portrayers, Laura Wright and Cameron Mathison, showed us why the couple is better apart.

GH laid the groundwork to split up “Crew” (Carly and Drew’s couple name) even before Jason was back on screen. He couldn’t let go of his vendetta against Nina (Cynthia Watros) — who broke zero laws in turning the duo into the SEC — but Carly (!) wanted to let it go.

Once Drew learned that his twin was alive, he marched over to Carly’s house. She was surprised that he chose to knock on the door, but she shouldn’t have been. Now that Jason’s back, Carly’s future is forever changed.

GH won a Daytime Emmy for directing Carly and Drew’s beautiful romantic beach scenes shot in Malibu even though the scene was set in Florida. (Those California mountains were a dead giveaway they were not in the Sunshine State!) Director Phideaux Xavier quipped to Soap Hub at the Daytime Emmys in the press room that Port Charles exists in a parallel alternate universe where you can freeze the world and do all kinds of things, resulting in mountains popping up in Florida!

Drew and Carly often faced a figurative mountain when it came to their romance. There was always the possibility that Jason would return — and now he has. We also couldn’t quite commit to Carly and Drew as she was arguably on the rebound from Sonny (Maurice Benard), who was (is?) in love with Nina.

Or maybe Carly was in love with Jason all along. Mathison gave Drew a strong position when he came to see Carly following the news of yet another Jason resurrection. He knows that Jason is the one for her despite the fact that Jason’s apparently chosen not to let her know he’s alive for the last few years.

And what about Drew taking the fall for Carly’s hand in the business shenanigans that got him thrown into Pentonville? How is Drew feeling right now that the woman he sacrificed his freedom for is so quick to leave him in the dust — for his brother? Maybe Nina’s not the one to whom he should be directing his anger and frustration.

Mathison nailed the heart of the matter in his performance when Drew told Carly that Jason’s “innocence” was only obvious to her. “You can’t even allow for the possibility that maybe Jason made a mistake,” he put forth. “I don’t know if Jason shot Dante and the truth is neither do you….Carly, all you have is how you feel for him. And that’s enough for you. Jason and Carly. You come first with each other. You always have and you always will.”

Yes, soaps are about romantic beach remotes and declarations of love — both the undying and temporary kind. However, they’re also about conflict. Carly and Drew have some now, and it doesn’t involve Nina (who did nothing wrong by calling the SEC). Not only will there be potential tension between Carly and Drew but we imagine that Drew might not be so fond of Jason — unless he has a really good reason for not letting folks know he’s been alive all this time.

Perhaps, GH will steer Drew into Willow’s path? Mathison and Katelyn MacMullen, Willow’s portrayer, have nice chemistry and their developing relationship could cause further complications between Drew and Willow’s mother-in-law — Carly!
