During their discussion, which was her second with Benard, Brown revealed that she’d had a miscarriage in her GH dressing room, which is what she drew from when Carly lost a baby. She also noted she had celiac disease and dyslexia. She also spoke about reinjuring her neck during scenes on GH.
On Instagram, Benard shared a clip from the episode. He wrote, “The timing of me putting together this [State of Mind] with the brave [Sarah Joy Brown] is Amazing. I’m watching something on [Netflix] called Worst Ex Ever…. But I’m so disgusted with these animals, and how sometimes the legal system lets the innocent victims pay, And The Animals let go to do more damage. My friend Sarah was taken advantage of, and it’s so DAMN UNFAIR. THIS IS HER STORY.
“Listen, I’m gonna tell you things,” Brown said. “I can already feel that it’s gonna be super hard for me to talk about…. Wow, something happened in 2016, and it blew up my life, and I really struggled with my mental health as a result of it for years, horrible isolation.”
“The reason I wanted to come on here and tell this story in the first place is because there are a lot of women this is happening to,” she said, tearing up. “I actually read an article about the prevalence of knockout drugs in the UK, and it’s really high. It’s really scary.”
She continued, “I was roofied, and I was raped. Violently, from what I could tell. I don’t have any memory of it.”
Brown told Benard that she was in Brooklyn in a bar waiting for a friend to return home. Outside of shooting As The World Turns, she’d never been to Brooklyn before that night. She doesn’t remember anything after she talked to her friend on the phone during a visit to the bathroom, and a man she didn’t know bought her a drink. After that, she didn’t remember much, but she woke up the next morning in clothes that weren’t hers with a terrible headache.
She relayed the details of the horrifying attack, and she said that she’d been a mess for days, weeks, and months following the violation. Brown said that nothing happened with her case for three months, and she had to return to Brooklyn to give her statement. The case went to the District Attorney, and they lost her case.
She revealed that they hadn’t investigated the correct date and that the whole thing was not handled well. Also, she said that it is difficult for people to handle a situation like this when they are from out of state. It took years for Brown to recover from the assault, and the attacker wasn’t brought to justice.
Ultimately, she told women they weren’t alone and thanked Benard for providing a safe place to discuss it. Brown is developing an app to help with these situations.
