Former General Hospital star Ryan Paevey explained to his fans how residuals in the film and TV industry work. He went to social media to correct a mistake he had made and apologized profusely for the gaff, admitting that he was continuing to learn things every day.
Paevey Was Open About His Error
Even though he hasn’t been seen on GH since his character Nathan West was killed off in 2018, Ryan Paevey has been beloved by fans. Whether it’s appearing in Hallmark films or selling cool stuff through his Fortunate Wanderer website, he continues to remain in the public eye. He regularly makes live Instagram videos to talk to his followers. In March, he posted a video in which he stated that he didn’t have any Hallmark films coming up yet for 2024 and was also working at his brother’s restaurant for free to help him out. He even gives all his tips to the other employees and scolded people that he considered were “labor shaming” others, particularly actors who weren’t acting. Paevey posted another live video in June to clarify some remarks he previously made about not receiving residuals when films he’s been in are rerun on TV. “I have to rectify something,” he stated, continuing, “The last time I did a live , we were talking about films that were being rerun, and I said that I don’t earn residuals on those. I’ve since been educated by my team and by my union. So, I have to tell you guys that that was my mistake. We do earn residuals.”
He further clarified that because he is on contract, it’s a rather unique situation in the entertainment industry. “I did not understand the way that these things were broken down. The way we earn residuals,” he explained, adding, “The way residuals are taken into account in advance when you’re in a contract. When you’re in a contract, there is a significant percentage of it that counts as an advance against residuals when films are rerun. And I did not understand this structure. So what I said was inaccurate.” He stated that his team, as well as the actors’ union, Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, helped to inform him on how residuals work.

Continuing Education
He admitted that the video would be short, “Because I wanted to let everyone know: that was me. That was my mistake. That’s on me. And I’ve been educated, and the education is ongoing. So, I’m sorry. I really am. And I hope that others in my position are being educated as well. Or maybe that others in my position are more educated than me and that my education continues.”
Ultimately, his point was, “Yes, we do earn residuals. And in my particular case, that was a significant percentage of the compensation that I received in advance of shooting these films.” He said he would pin the post in case anyone needed to hear it again.
