Rumors on social media that General Hospital has recast a member of its young set have turned out to be true. Sydney Mikayla is officially exiting the role of Trina Robinson. Tabyana Ali is taking over the part.
Soap Opera Digest broke the casting news. “Sydney asked to leave in order to focus on college,” Frank Valentini, executive producer, GH, said. “We love her and are sad to see her go, but of course support her decision and wish her the best.”
“I have loved working on General Hospital,” Mikayla said, “but I feel like this is the right time to dive in and enjoy my college experience to the fullest. The cast has become family and bringing the character of Trina to life has been one of the best experiences of my career thus far. Thank you to Frank and the entire team for believing in me and giving me this wonderful opportunity.”
Sydney Mikayla took over the part of Trina from Tiana Le, who played the part from 2017-18. Mikayla stepped into the role on February 20, 2019. She started out recurring on the show and later became a contract player as Trina’s friendship with Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) and Cameron Webber (William Lipton) grew. Soon, important relationships were explored.
After the death of her daughter Kiki Jerome (Haley Erin), Ava Jerome took a motherly interest in Trina. Next, her mother, Dr. Portia Robinson (Brook Kerr), joined the staff at GH. We learned that Trina’s dad is Marcus Taggert (Réal Andrews). There was instant chemistry between Nicholas Alexander Chavez’s Spencer Cassadine, who joined GH last summer, and Mikayla’s Trina. She challenges the Cassadine heir to be his best self.
Last May, Sydney Mikayla announced on Instagram that she’d be attending UCLA. She’s voiced characters on the animated projects Craig of the Creek, The Barbarian and the Troll, and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
Tabyana Ali’s credits include Empire Waist, The Big Show Show, Horror Noire, Shimmer and Shine, The Big Brain, A Kid Called Mayonnaise, Line of Duty, and Somebody Up There Likes Me. Ali appeared as a contestant on the Disney game show Win, Lose, or Draw with celebrities Peyton List (ex-Bess, All My Children) and the late Cameron Boyce (ex-Stone Cates, Jr., General Hospital: Night Shift).
Mikayla’s last air date is set for Thursday, March 17. A first air date for Ali has not been announced but is set for later this month.
