Beloved General Hospital Alum Emma Samms To Enter The Whoniverse

Though Covid has precluded Emma Samms from returning to her old stomping grounds at General Hospital, fans of the actress — and of radio serials — will soon have the opportunity to hear her in a brand-new role.

Emma Samms And Doctor Who

Radiotimes.com was the first to break the story that Samms has joined the voice cast of Big Finish’s The Companion Chronicles: The Second Doctor – Volume 3.

For the uninitiated, The Companion Chronicles is an audio series spinoff of Britain’s premier science fiction TV program, Doctor Who.

Samms will have a starring role in the four-part adventure’s first outing, The Death of the Daleks by George Mann.

Like Holly Sutton Scorpio before her, Samms’s character, Anya, is a formidable, albeit, “damaged” lady. And like her time spent on General Hospital, Samms is once again going toe-to-toe with evil forces, though rather than gun-totting murders or ideological terrorists, Samms’s latest foes are dreaded Daleks, an extraterrestrial race of mutants hellbent on conquering the universe.

Among Samms’s many co-stars is Doctor Who and Emmerdale veteran Frazer Hines. Hines will once again be portraying Jaime McCrimmon, a Scotsman plucked out the 18th Century — a role he originated in the TV version of Doctor Who some five decades previous.

Hines will also be pulling double duty, by substituting for the late Patrick Troughton as the second incarnation of “The Doctor” — the titular time traveler, benevolent meddler, and self-appointed protector of the Earth.

In Samms, Hines has an admirer. “When I read the script and knowing that he was playing both of those parts, I assumed they would be recorded separately. To see him switch back and forth like he does is like a masterclass. He’s unbelievably skilled and I’m still in awe of the fact that he’s able to do that.”

The Companion Chronicles: The Second Doctor – Volume 3 is available for pre-order at Big Finish.com ahead of an April 2022 release date.

As for the future of Holly, her ex-husband Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) still thinks she’s died, but at some point, when Samms’s schedule and health allows, he will hopefully receive a message that she’s still very much alive — and GH viewers can’t wait for that day!

General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes. For more about what’s coming up in Port Charles, check out all the latest that’s been posted on GH spoilers, and for an in-depth look at the show’s history, click here.
