Valentin Cassadine had been yearning for Anna Devane since they were first employed together at the WSB. It’s taken decades – and mountains of patience, but a romantic connection has materialized between them, and the long-overdue Valentin-Anna coupling is a major General Hospital hit.
General Hospital: Slow and Steady
Unlike some of the show’s recent forced fabricated pairings, Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) and Anna (Finola Hughes) have history and a wealth of it. Their back story is fascinating and was begging to be explored. The pair met when Anna was young and beautiful, and Valentin was insecure, stuttering, and suffering from scoliosis. He made a pass at her, she rejected him, and it set him off on a spiral of misdeeds and transgressions.
Fast forward to 2016 when they reconnected in Port Charles. Things were dramatically different. Valentine was now dashing and dapper, while Anna didn’t even recall their initial encounter.
He played a cat and mouse game with her, before reminding her of their past. Valentin’s longing was still there, while Anna had never given him a thought. Their lives had moved on in different directions – Valentin content with Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros); Anna content with Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton).
A New GH Direction
Yet, Valentin and Anna developed a strong bond, as they unraveled their twisted General Hospital pasts with Anna’s twisted sister, Alex, the unscrupulous Faison (Anders Hove), and the pair’s diabolical son, Peter August (Wes Ramsey).
Valentin and Anna became confidants, teaming up for a common cause: originally to save Peter, then, sadly, to annihilate him. Along the way, they became trusted friends. So when their respective relationships fell apart, it was only natural that they turned to each other.
Two of a Kind
What’s wonderful about the Valentin-Anna pairing is that they understand each other as no one else can – the double-dealing, the need to keep secrets and, oft times, work outside the perimeters of the law. It’s part of their makeup as WSB and double agents, and it’s bonded them in a unique way.
The pair’s deep mental connection has recently been matched by a strong physical one, enhanced by some tender, romantic onscreen moments – like the duo’s first kiss while they were stranded together in a cabin. With the groundwork having been laid so intricately, Valentin and Anna have reached the point where they’re ready to take off as a Port Charles couple. While it may seem long overdue, it will hopefully prove to have been well worth the wait.
