Soap Hub newsletter subscribers mark your calendar for Tuesday, August 10 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. That’s when veteran soap star Tristan Rogers will be joining us for a Soap Hub Fireside video chat!
Tristan Rogers currently plays Robert Scorpio on General Hospital but he’s also known for playing Colin Atkinson on The Young and the Restless and Hunter Jones on The Bold and the Beautiful.
Rogers burst onto the daytime scene at the height of GH’s popularity in 1980. After successfully taking down mobster Frank Smith (George Gaynes), Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) and Laura Webber Baldwin (Genie Francis) were tackling a new adventure — finding the elusive Ice Princess.
Enter Rogers as WSB (World Security Bureau) agent Robert Scorpio, who was also on the trail of the Ice Princess. After an initial case of understandable mistrust, friendships were born and Scorpio, Luke, and Laura prevented the Cassadines from freezing the world!
Tristan Rogers has played the part of Scorpio on and off over the years as Scorpio has been paired with, among others, Tiffany Hill (Sharon Wyatt), Jackie Templeton (Demi Moore; now, Kim Delaney), Holly Sutton (Emma Samms), Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), and others. Last year, Scorpio shared a platonic super-spy caper with Lisa LoCicero’s Olivia Quartermaine.
Scorpio and Olivia came thisclose to learning that Holly isn’t dead, as they were led to believe. She’s actually alive but is being held a prisoner. “I thought that was a good idea,” Rogers says of GH showing a video that proves Holly’s still with us. “The story was interrupted because of COVID. [Showing Holly alive] was just enough to whet the appetite of the viewers. ‘Who’s got her?’ ‘Is Robert going to find her?’ ‘Where is she?’ Those questions, I think, are still on the viewers’ minds.”
Rogers says he’s seen interactions between soap fans and daytime stars change over the years. In pre-COVID times, actors would travel across the country and meet fans in person. Stars also learned how viewers were responding to stories by reading snail mail. Today, social media and virtual interactions are the new way of doing things.
“I’ve seen the Internet become good and bad,” Rogers says. “It’s good because of the accessibility it gives everybody on a moment-by-moment basis. It’s bad because of all the crap that’s on it. If you took off all the b.s. advertising, and the pornography, and half a dozen other things, it’d be 70% smaller.
“Zoom is fine for maintaining connections,” adds Rogers, hastening to add, “but it’s not the same as seeing people in the same room. We’ve definitely lost a certain part of communication with people. You’d do personal appearances in the 1980s and the reason so many people turned out is that you’d reached them by doing your show Monday through Friday. People wanted more.”
Last year, Tristan Rogers took home the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Digital Drama Series for his role as Doc on the Amazon Prime series Studio City.
