John J. York has spent 35 years bringing Malcolm “Mac” Scorpio to life on General Hospital, and the actor has no plans to slow down. While celebrating the milestone, York also reflected on the man who helped shape his early days in Port Charles, shared encouraging news about his health, and expressed gratitude for the support that carried him through one of the toughest chapters of his life.

Key Takeaways

  • John J. York celebrated 35 years as Mac Scorpio on GH.
  • York credited Tristan Rogers with welcoming him and helping shape his early years on the soap.
  • He reflected on Mac’s evolution from mercenary to one of Port Charles’ most trusted figures.
  • York shared that his health is doing well and now requires maintenance visits every four months.
  • He expressed deep gratitude for the support he received from his GH family during treatment.

Remembering a Daytime Legend

York spoke with TV Weekly in an interview later shared by its sister publication, Remind Magazine, where he looked back on joining GH in 1991. He explained that Mac started out as “a mercenary, a guy with an edge,” before adding, “After a while, whatever personality traits I had as a human being came across onscreen. That’s when the slow turn began. Mac’s not a bad guy. He’s a good guy!”

That evolution helped turn Mac into one of Port Charles’ most dependable residents.

York also spoke warmly about the late Tristan Rogers, who played his onscreen brother, Robert Scorpio, and who immediately made him feel welcome. “Tristan was an icon in daytime,” York said. “He was funny, and he embraced me. He took me under his wing. We spent a lot of time in dressing rooms talking about our scenes.”

He added that he recognized something special about Rogers and shared his gratitude for their friendship.

Mac also found lasting happiness with Felicia (Kristina Wagner) after years of romantic twists and turns. Looking back at Felicia choosing Mac over Frisco (Jack Wagner) during the show’s 50th anniversary celebration, York admitted, “I was humbled by that.” He knew longtime Frisco and Felicia fans were passionate, but he felt Mac and Felicia ultimately built a relationship that stood the test of time.

Looking Ahead With Gratitude

Away from the cameras, York faced a far more serious challenge in 2023 when he stepped away from GH for treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome and smoldering multiple myeloma. Thankfully, those difficult days are behind him. He happily shared, “Doing very well. It’s more about maintenance now. I was going to the hospital every day for six months for a while. Now, it’s a visit every four months.”

York never forgot the support he received while recovering. He recalled moments where he prayed alone, but said his GH family rallied around him with messages, videos, and constant encouragement. Executive producer Frank Valentini, Kristina Wagner, Jon Lindstrom (Kevin), and many others stayed in touch throughout his recovery.

That outpouring of love only deepened York’s appreciation for the show he has called home for more than three decades. “GH is my home away from home,” he said. “I love it. I’m so grateful to be on this iconic show. Let’s go for another 35 years!”

Given how warmly fans continue to embrace Mac, many would gladly take him up on that.
