It wasn’t too long after Rebecca Herbst arrived on General Hospital that her plucky character, Elizabeth Webber, suffered a horror that was so real, so haunting, it changed her life and several others’ lives in Port Charles forever. That harrowing story was tied to the life of one of the show’s writers at the time, Michele Val Jean. That story took place 24 years ago this past week.
Rebecca Herbst Remembers
It was recalled by the Twitter account, General Hospi-tales, which marked the day when Liz was grabbed from behind in the park and raped. Val Jean shared the Tweet, adding, “Hard to believe this was 24 years ago. Still seared on my heart. Thank you @RebeccaLHerbst for your sensitivity and brilliance. You were… you are… a gift.”
Herbst, who is rarely active on social media, shared Val Jean’s (now a writer on The Bold and the Beautiful) tweet, adding, “You, my beautiful friend @MicheleValJean are the gift. Thank you for sharing your soul with the world. Love you always…♥️”
As they were already discussing it, Val Jean went on to share an interview both did at the time with the now-defunct magazine, Soap Opera Weekly, saying, “So since we’re on the subject, here’s an interview [Rebecca Herbst] and I did for the greatly missed Soap Opera Weekly. Page 2 in the comments.” She also tagged former Editor-in-Chief, Mimi Torchin as well as now Soap Hub contributing writer Janet Di Lauro.
Herbst responded by saying, “After reading this article, I just want to thank you again, Michele, for letting me in, for trusting me. Your story has helped so many people heal. A true angel. And we are forever bonded. @MicheleValJean ♥️”
The article details how Val Jean shared all of the details of her own rape survival with Rebecca Herbst, and through penning Liz’s healing journey, it helped her with her own. The bravery of both, not lost on the viewing audience at the time, has endeared both women to soap fans everywhere.
