GH Star Nicholas Alexander Chavez Talks Trina v. Esme

Nicholas Alexander Chavez — well his character, Spencer Cassadine — is in a pickle on General Hospital. He’s headed off to Spring Ridge for his role in stalking Ava Jerome Cassadine. Presumably, he’ll have time there to figure out which woman is his destiny — Esme Prince or Trina Robinson!

In theory, Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl), who was Spencer’s partner-in-crime when he was harassing Ava (Maura West), may seem more suited for Spencer given their backgrounds and history. Key word: may!

“On paper, Esme and Spencer are well-matched,” Nicholas Alexander Chavez tells Soap Hub. “Esme does seem like a good choice. There’s a comfortability in Esme as strange as that may seem.”

Figuring It All Out

Chavez notes that Esme being a little detached makes her very different from Trina (Sydney Mikayla). “[Esme] doesn’t have the same vulnerability that Trina does,” the actor offers. “That’s more comfortable for Spencer to be around rather than someone who is incredibly vulnerable like Trina is.”

GH’s Spencer says that choosing Esme over Trina is akin to taking a short-term approach to the situation in which he finds himself. “It may make sense in the moment but [choosing Esme] doesn’t allow either character the opportunity to grow into a better human being,” muses Chavez, who believes that “Spencer wants to become a better human being, a better version of himself. I don’t know if he’s pieced it together yet that [being with Esme] is a choice made out of comfortability rather than pursuing a more enlightened way of living [with Trina].”

What does Trina bring to Spencer’s life that neither Esme nor anyone else does? “Trina is special for so many reasons,” Chavez says. “One of the biggest things is that she and [Spencer] have such vastly different backgrounds. She is so unconcerned with everything that others are so concerned with — the money, the status. She just doesn’t care.”

While Spencer may not be able to put it into these exact words just yet, his portrayer sees Trina as someone who is seeking love and companionship and is also someone who wants to make the world a better place.

“That’s reflective of how ambitious she is at the gallery,” Chavez notes. “She’s one of those people who wants to build things rather than break things down. That’s what has created such a magnetic draw for Spencer.”
