General Hospital’s New Couple Force-Feed: Is It Ruining the Soap?

Daytime is all about telling love stories and creating couples to root for. However, over the past few months, new twosomes are being forced down viewer’s throats at the expense of cherished duos, who have been destroyed. Is General Hospital’s new couple force-feed ruining the soap?

A Case of Separation Anxiety on General Hospital

The list of popular pairings that have been dismantled over the past year is inconceivable: Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright), Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco), Curtis Ashford (Donnell Turner) and Jordan Ashford (Brianna Nicole Smith), Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) and Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton), Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) and Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth), Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) and Jasper “Jax” Jacks (Ingo Rademacher)… You can even add the twisted Willow Tait (Kateyln MacMullen), Hamilton Chase (Josh Swickard), Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson), and Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) quadrangle to the mix.

While it’s fine and absolutely necessary to inject drama into couples’ lives – after all, daytime is all about separating duos to ultimately script them back together – it’s not fine to demolish so many at the same time. It’s too harsh and jarring for viewers, who deserve a few happy duos to cling to and enjoy. Sadly, the General Hospital writers are not giving them any.

GH Looking Elsewhere

The reason for all the breakups is clear. The soap’s scribes are intent – maybe even a little obsessed – with pushing their own agendas and couplings. There’s Jason and Britt (Kelly Thiebaud), Jax (Ingo Rademacher) and Britt, Anna and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart), Finn and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), Curtis and Portia (Brook Kerr), Nina and Sonny/”Mike,” Sam and Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), and Sasha and Brando (Johnny Wactor).

While one pairing definitely has legs and has been teased for years, Anna and Valentin, many have no reason to be together and have been shamefully forced. Others have absolutely no chemistry or heat, yet continue to be pushed together regardless.

General Hospital’s Fraught Fans

The varied hookups have left fans’ heads spinning and largely unwilling to follow along. They want the longtime pairings they know and love, and not the couples being pushed down their throats.

GH: Why, Simply, Why?

The Nixon Falls story keeping Carly and Sonny apart has gone on far too long. Killing off Franco was a huge error, after intricately building his love story with Elizabeth. The Jason and Sam split made no sense from the get-go, and recently having Sam burn her memories of her longtime love at the coaxing of another Jason ex, Elizabeth, was ludicrous. Do both women want to erase their memories of Jason from their lives? Really? They each have a son with the man.

Meanwhile, the slow Sam-Dante push isn’t working, and neither are Finn and Elizabeth. Dante’s still in love with the inexplicably missing Lulu (Emme Rylan), and there’s no way Elizabeth would ever move on from Franco so quickly.

There is time to restore romantic order in Port Charles. Have Curtis come to his senses about Jordan, and let Lulu wake up from her coma and reunite with Dante. Then top it all off with bringing Sonny home just in time to stop Carly and Jason’s wedding.
