General Hospital’s Michael, Willow, Chase Saga Has Gone Horribly Wrong

When Sasha and Chase selflessly pushed their true loves, Michael and Willow, into getting married to secure custody of Wiley, General Hospital had the makings of a terrifically tangled quadrangle. Unfortunately, as things have played out, Sasha’s been extricated from the mix, leaving a Michael, Willow, Chase saga that has gone horribly wrong.

General Hospital’s Missed Opportunity

Removing Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) from the story was the first major mistake. She was the only flawed character in the foursome, a good girl who made bad choices. Yet, her love for Michael (Chad Duell) was pure and real. There were fans rooting for her to win Michael back; particularly after he raced to her bedside when she nearly overdosed on drugs. Think how complicated the Sasha, Michael, Willow, Chase quadrangle could have become if Sasha were carrying Michael’s baby instead of Brando’s (Johnny Wactor).

And Then There Were Three

Instead, the promising foursome was diluted into a weak triangle with Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) temporarily caught between Michael and Chase (Josh Swickard). The problem with the trio is that they’re all do-gooders. There’s no drama, angst, and, above all, heat. Hence, Willow ultimately choosing Michael over Chase was lackluster, as both men are pretty much interchangeable white knights.

Drama Missed

To rev things up, the writers poisoned Chase and sent him to his deathbed, with the kind Willow racing to his bedside –- a complete ripoff of Michael running to Sasha’s bedside a few months earlier. Yet, inexplicably, the experience hasn’t awakened, nor even stirred Willow’s old feelings of love for Chase. Wouldn’t that have made more sense? Seeing Willow second guess her decision to stay with Michael, now that she’s faced with the very real possibility of losing Chase forever, would have totally revved up the drama.

Last Chance

General Hospital does have the opportunity to turn things around, now that Willow’s agreed to marry the dying Chase. Perhaps the show’s writers will finally explore Willow falling back in love with Chase when/if he finally makes a full recovery. After all, it would be a shame to miss the same opportunity twice. The twist would breathe life into the long, drawn-out Michael/Willow/Chase triangle and salvage the going-nowhere saga. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC.
