For a show resplendent with topnotch talent, nonstop action, and riveting emotional drama on a daily basis, General Hospital has been going down a dangerously dark path. Over the past few months, the show’s been pretty much doom, gloom, and despair 24/7. There’s no love and barely any happiness for anyone.

General Hospital Commentary — Couples Kaput

If you’re having trouble finding a couple to root for on General Hospital, there’s a good reason. The bulk of them have been destroyed. The show, once rife with strong passionate pairings, has literally been stripped of love and romance. Check out the relationship ruination below.

Sam (Kelly Monaco) called it quits with Jason (Steve Burton). Curtis (Donnell Turner) walked out on Jordan (Briana Nicole Henry). Nina (Cynthia Watros) ended things with Jax (Ingo Rademacher). Carly (Laura Wright) is mourning Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) “death,” while Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) is coming to terms with Franco’s (Roger Howarth) murder.

Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) separated from Ned (Wally Kurth). Finn (Michael Easton) split with Anna (Finola Hughes); Maxie (Kirsten Storms) dumped Peter (Wes Ramsey); and the Michael (Chad Duell), Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), Chase (Josh Swickard), and Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) quadrangle has left all four parties unattached.

Dawn of the Dead

The death toll has been running rampant in Port Charles, too. First, Mike (Max Gail) succumbed to Alzheimer’s. Then, evil Nelle (Chloe Lanier) fell off a cliff to her demise. Dev (Ashton Arbab) and Dustin (Mark Lawson) were killed in an explosion. Julian (William deVry) was fatally shot by Cyrus’s (Jeff Kober) henchmen.

Sonny has been presumed dead, after plunging into a river. And, in the biggest shocker of all, Franco took a bullet to his chest and bled out before Elizabeth’s eyes. Sadly, it’s made funerals and memorials an all-to-common occurrence.

More Doom and Gloom

The gloomy daze doesn’t end there. Lulu’s (Emme Rylan) in a coma. Dante’s (Dominic Zamprogna) a shell of his old self. Cameron (William Lipton) is spiraling. Maxie (Kirsten Storms) learned her baby daddy is a killer. Chase was devastated to learn his brother is (okay, not really) his father. Taggert’s (Réal Andrews) in jail, and Jason’s just been arrested for murder, while Peter (Wes Ramsey) and Cyrus continue to roam free.

It’s time the show sees the light – literally – and turns the page on all this darkness. Sure, there needs to be turmoil and trouble to keep things interesting on every show. That is, after all, what drives storylines. But there needs to be a balance of joy and happiness, too.

At their core, soaps have always been about love in the afternoon, and, right now, GH hasn’t been delivering. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
