Remember the Britt Westbourne of old; cool, confident and no man’s fool? Well, the tough-as-nails General Hospital doctor has finally got her groove back – without Jason Morgan. And, quite frankly, it’s been long overdue.
Since being dumped by Jason (Steve Burton), Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) has been a shell of her true self – down, dejected, pining over the one that got away. It was borderline pathetic, which has never been her style or modus operandi.
Heck, Britt’s long-time nemeses Elizabeth Webber Baldwin (Rebecca Herbst) and Terry Randolph (Cassandra James) felt so sorry for her the day Jason was “marrying” Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) that they orchestrated a computer slip-up at General Hospital just to keep her busy — and not alone.
Things finally shifted and got back on track in a strong sequence of scenes between Britt and Carly. Feeling like she owed Britt an explanation for everything that had transpired the past few months, Carly ‘fessed up to lying about her and Jason being in love and noted that their wedding had been a business move, although they had planned on having a real marriage. That is until Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) resurfaced, things went back to normal and set Jason free.
However, Carly’s benevolent attempt at orchestrating a Britt/Jason reunion, while making it clear that she would always be a major part of Jason’s life, wasn’t well received. Although Britt was probably happy to hear the pair had never been “in love,” she wasn’t interested in Carly’s attempt to relinquish Jason back to her, and she let her know it in no uncertain terms.
Finally, the Britt of old General Hospital was back, and that’s not how she rolled. “Coming in second doesn’t work for me,” she told Carly straight-forwardly. And Britt meant it. She was the strong self-assured woman she used to be before the writers started whitewashing her character.
When Carly countered that Jason was a hard habit to break, Britt wouldn’t be baited, let alone consider the possibility. “Not for me,” she spat back. Then she walked off with her head held high.
Let’s hope the show’s writers don’t lose focus of who the real Britt is again – a tough, kick-ass chick who doesn’t get played, especially by a man. She’s one of daytime’s most unique female characters, and she needs to continue thriving and being exactly who she is.
