Ten minutes after squashing viewers’ hopes of a Dante and Lulu reconciliation, General Hospital has plotted another couple’s demise. Now, the soap is playing a risky breakup game with Jason and Sam.
Longtime fans of the longtime supercouple were no doubt floored when Sam (Kelly Monaco) delivered a blow to Jason (Steve Burton) as he departed on his latest “assignment” for Sonny (Maurice Benard). “When you leave tonight, please don’t come back,” announced Sam.
A chat with son Danny, who admitted he wished things could be normal for their family, inspired Sam to take a stand. Sure, her fears and frustrations are warranted. She’s scared and tired of mob life. However, that is what she signed up for upon falling in love with, marrying, and starting a family with Jason.
Separating from Jason now isn’t going to make Sam or her kids’ lives safer unless she’s prepared to take the children and move out of the country. But if she plans to continue living in Port Charles, wouldn’t the clan be more protected living with Jason than without him, especially with the threat of Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober) in full force?
And is Danny really going to be happier without his dad under the same roof? Remember, the kid was absolutely thrilled when Jason finally moved back home a few months ago, and so were “Jasam” fans.
Breaking Jason and Sam up now is risky, considering the happy GH couples who have fallen by the wayside over the past year, like Willow and Chase, and Sasha and Michael. Then there’s the huge re-pairing potential that was lost for Dante and Lulu, when Lulu was shipped off to a long-term care facility. What happened to the love and joy GH has long been known for?
It was just three years ago that viewers were on the edge of their seats when Steve Burton returned to GH as Jason, eventually leading to Sam’s breakup with Drew and recommitment to her soulmate.
Fans were delighted by their long-awaited reconciliation and the pair professing their love to each other. That’s why it’s so heartbreaking to watch Sam willing to end it all and move on solo. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
