In 1996, an avenging angel named Marcus Taggert burst onto the General Hospital canvas with a mission to battle the criminal element — though, much to his great chagrin, he never bagged the reprobate he truly wanted.

Who Is Marcus Taggert?

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Taggert was a juvenile delinquent headed down a dark path. He was taken under the wing of patrol officer Deke Woods and eventually straightened up his act and enrolled in the police academy.

Upon graduating, Taggert was partnered with Deke, his savior and mentor, and the older man’s shooting death devastated the rookie. Imbued with a burning hatred for the man he held responsible for the killing — Sonny Corinthos, Deke’s stepson — Taggert vowed that justice would be served.

That pursuit eventually led him to Port Charles, the New York hamlet that Sonny ruled over after having killed its former kingpin, Joe Scully. Taggert did his utmost to lessen Sonny’s stranglehold on the town’s underworld but his actions proved futile.

The Female Persuasion

During his time in PC, Taggert caught the eye of Dara Jensen, the town’s District Attorney. Though Taggert thought they might have a shot at a real future together, Dara’s ambitious nature got in the way and, eventually, they decided to part company and remain merely friends.

Next, Taggert fell under the sway of FBI agent Hannah Scott, a former paramour of his most hated rival. Their relationship was hot and heavy but Taggert eventually ended it because he could not stand the friendship that his girlfriend had with AJ Quartermaine.

The Lines We Cross For Family

In 2000, Taggert begrudgingly welcomed his half-sister, Gia Campbell, back into his life and his home. When he discovered that she had been involved in a car accident that nearly cost Elizabeth Webber her life, Taggert compromised his principals and covered up the crime.

General Hospital Exit… and Return

Ultimately, it was those same principals — and one argument too many with newly minted DA Scott Baldwin — that resulted in Taggert’s downfall and subsequent banishment to Portland, Oregon.

Now, thanks to a call from current police commissioner Jordan (Briana Nicole Henry), Taggert is back in Port Charles to help her with the growing mob war. Will he ever get the goods on Sonny? Stay tuned. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
