Is there a more put-upon General Hospital character of late than Sasha Gilmore Corbin? She has suffered so much, that it’s almost too hard to watch her go through yet another trauma.
While she arrived in Port Charles as a mystery woman Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) was paying to pose as Nina Reeves’s long-lost daughter, she quickly grew into a sympathetic character who had gotten in way over her head, but what this soap has put her through as penance is downright criminal.
Even when Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) was still pretending to be Nina’s daughter, she nearly died when poisoned by Cassandra Pierce (Jessica Tuck) after a vacation with Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell). Her guilt when Nina learned the truth seemed to be enough considering that she had that near-death experience, but then she tried to make up for all her sins in a convoluted way.
A selfless Sasha faked an affair with Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) so Michael would marry Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen) and retain custody of his son Wiley. Things only went downhill for Sasha from there as she became a drug addict and nearly died when Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober) gave her tainted drugs.
She finally seemed to get it together when a one-night stand with Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor) led to a pregnancy. When that pregnancy was way too idyllic, we should have known it was all too good to be true.
Nobody needed to see a baby die right before Christmas, but GH seemingly did not care as it killed Sasha and Brando’s baby after he was deprived of oxygen during labor due to a placental abruption. Sasha was barely given the chance to mourn when she went right back to work and right back on drugs.
And the torture didn’t end as we watched Sasha not know where to turn next after running down Harmony Miller (Inga Cadranel) and killing her. (In all fairness, Harmony ran out into the road after a recent killing spree.) But somehow, she carried on — without the drugs.
When the drugs came back into play again as Sasha had to appear as The Face of Deception on a home shopping channel, we knew she would have her final meltdown, but we did not expect anything as painful to watch as what we got. Somehow Sasha was famous enough for a paparazzi photographer to chase her everywhere, but she wasn’t famous enough for the shopping channel to know her baby had recently died when she was asked to model a baby carrier wrap with a baby boy doll inside it.
Sasha imagined that the doll was her own precious Liam and lost it on television for all to see. At that point, all we could ask was — is that enough, GH? Is there anything else you need to do to this poor character who just can’t get a break? Let’s not even forget that actress Sofia Mattsson had a baby not long before Sasha gave birth and has had to play these scenes as a brand-new mother.
Yes, this was the vehicle that got Sasha the help she needed after Brando put an end to things and got her to the hospital, but Sasha and the fans probably can’t take much more. Give Sasha a win just this once and put this poor woman out of her constant misery.
